Moffat is a city ( Statutory Town ) in Saguache County in the state of Colorado in the United States . The city is located in south-central Colorado in the middle of the San Luis Valley .

history

In the 1870s, Moffat had a population of several thousand and was the center of the trade and freight network that made the city one of the most important mining and livestock areas in southern Colorado. In the election to the capital of the new state of Colorado, Moffat was only barely defeated by the city of Denver . The economic decline came when the USA lost a lawsuit with Mexico for water rights and as a result built a water diversion system to compensate for the deficit, which diverted water from the northern half of the San Luis Valley via the central watershed into the lower Rio Grande . This ultimately caused the mines to dry up and the agricultural industry to migrate to western Colorado. The local population still has no access to local water.
