The historic city of Saguache (səˈwætʃ) is located in the county of the same name in Saguache County in Colorado and is the county seat of the county. The population of Saguache was 485 at the last census ( United States Census 2010 ). Convicted cannibal Alferd Packer has served his sentence in Saguache County Jail.
Surname
The name Saguache comes from Indian and means "blue earth" or "water on the blue earth". The word shares its ancestry with the Spanish word saguaro (cactus) and is also pronounced similarly. In Spanish , the city is mostly spelled as Saguache while in English it is mostly spelled as Sawatch .

Demographics
At the time of the 2000 United States Census , the city was home to 578 people, 262 households, and 160 families. The population density averaged 587.3 inhabitants per km². There were 328 housing units at an average of 333.3 per km ². The population was 79.93% white , 2.60% Native American , 0.17% Asian , 13.15% other races, and 4.15% two or more races. 34.43% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any kind.
There were 262 households, of which 26.0% are children under the age of 18, 45.4% were married and lived together, 12.2% had a female head of the household without a husband, and 38.9% were no families. 33.6% of all households were made up of individuals and there was someone living in 17.2% of all households aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.73 people.
The population was divided into 23.0% minors, 5.2% 18–24 year olds, 25.8% 25–44 year olds, 28.5% 45–64 year olds and 5.1% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 women there were 99.3 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 91.0 men.
