The Château La Nerthe is one of the largest and most traditional wineries in the municipality of Châteauneuf-du-Pape .

The vineyard consists of a contiguous area of 90 hectares . It lies on gravel ground in the southeast of the appellation area of the same name . Red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape are produced.

history

The estate was first mentioned in 1560 under its then name Beauvenir , then in 1593 as La Nerte (without h ). The domain remained in the possession of the then buyer, the noble family Tulle de Villefranche , until 1879 . They built today's castle in 1736. La Nerthe wine was famous as early as the middle of the 18th century and was exported to America. It has been bottled on the estate since 1784. In a classification established by Jullien in 1822 , La Nerthe is known as the best wine in the southern Rhône . In 1870, Commander Joseph Ducos took over the winery. During the Second World War , the General Staff of the German Air Force quartered in the castle . Château La Nerthe has been owned by the Richard family since 1985.

The wine

The varieties Grenache (53%), Syrah (27%), Mourvèdre 15%, Cinsault 4% and various varieties ( Counoise , Muscardin , Piquepoul Noir , Vaccarèse ) 1% are used for simple red wine .

The white wine is blended from Grenache Blanc (share 27%), Bourboulenc (15%), Clairette Blanche (19%) and Roussanne (39%).

The red top cuvée is called Cuvée des Cadettes , the white is called Clos de Beauvenir in reference to the old name of the estate . Every year the winery fills around 290,000 bottles of red wine and 40,000 bottles of white wine . It produces according to the rules of organic viticulture and has been certified by the ECOCERT organization since 1998 .
