La Nerthe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

La Nerthe is a hamlet near L'Estaque and belongs to the 16th arrondissement of the southern French city of Marseille in the Bouches-du-Rhône department .

The hamlet emerged from a medieval settlement. This was fortified and a castle probably belonged to it. A cement factory was built around the middle of the 19th century, which gradually resulted in the town being repopulated. This development was encouraged by the construction of the railway line from Avignon to Marseille at the same time. In 1886 the place consisted of eight inhabited houses. The place is in the middle of the Chaîne de l'Estaque . This is also called Chaîne de la Nerthe after the place .
