Larry Rosen

Larry Rosen (born May 25, 1940 in New York City , New York , † October 9, 2015 in Park Ridge , New Jersey ) was an American jazz producer and media entrepreneur.

Live and act

Larry Rosen began his career as a musician; first he played drums in the Newport Youth Band ; During his studies at the Manhattan School of Music he met Dave Grusin , with whom he initially accompanied the singer Andy Williams . In 1972 he and Grusin produced singer Jon Lucien for RCA . After further productions, among others with Earl Klugh , Patti Austin and Lee Ritenour and a joint venture with Arista Records , they founded their own label, GRP Records , in 1982 , for which Rosen worked as a sound engineer and producer. He was responsible for more than 350 albums, 80 of which were nominated for a Grammy and 33 received a Grammy, as well as other awards. Rosen was a pioneer in digital recording technology (he recorded the first digital album beyond the classical genre). His production company Jazz Roots produces educational programs; he was also the presenter of the NPR radio show of the same name . His Larry Rosen Productions have produced several HD television series such as Legends of Jazz for American television, with personalities such as Ramsey Lewis , Quincy Jones and Phil Ramone .

In 1996 he co-founded N2K , one of the first companies that not only operates websites for musicians such as Leonard Bernstein , Miles Davis , David Bowie or the Rolling Stones , but also sells music over the Internet via downloads and which merged with CD Now in 1999 .

Larry Rosen died of a brain tumor on October 9, 2015, at the age of 75 in Park Ridge, New Jersey .

Prizes and awards

Rosen was named “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Ernst & Young in the field of new media. The magazine Forbes praised him as "Internet icon" in a story about the masters of the new universe. He received the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences Govenor's Award and was inducted into the A&R / Producers Honor Roll .
