Charles Neville (born December 28, 1938 in New Orleans - † April 26, 2018 ) was an American saxophonist of rhythm and blues and jazz , who also became known beyond the Neville Brothers .

Live and act

Neville, the second oldest of the Neville brothers, began playing the saxophone as a child. At the age of twelve he became a member of a school orchestra. Together with his brother Art Neville he founded the Turqoises as a teenager and then played briefly with the Hawketts before going on tour with Gene Franklin & the Houserockers. He then accompanied R&B musicians at the Drop Inn and then toured with Johnny Ace , Little Walter , Jimmy Reed , Big Maybelle , James Brown , BB King , Bobby Bland and Ray Charles from 1954 to 1956 . After serving in the military, he briefly studied music at Southern University in 1958 , but then went on tour again. After serving in prison for drug offenses , he moved to New York City , where he played with musicians such as Johnny Taylor, Clarence Carter and OV Wright and taught at Goddard College. In 1972 he joined his brothers Aaron and Cyril Neville, who at that time formed the group Soul Machine , which then became the band Wild Tchoupitoulas and in 1977 the Neville Brothers . In 1991 he formed his own band with Diversity , which was then followed by his own quartet. He was also involved in various Kip Hanrahan projects. Charles Neville also recorded with Ramsey McLean & the Survivors as well as with the Songcatchers , with AJ Loria, Dr. John , Hilary Noble , Maria Muldaur , U-Ka and with Roger Sallom. He has also performed with Carlos Santana , The Grateful Dead, and Herbie Hancock .

Neville also wrote the musical Shangri-La . In 1989 he received a Grammy with the Neville Brothers in the category "Best Pop Instrumental" for Healing Chant . He died in 2018 of complications from colon cancer .
