YolanDa Brown (born October 4, 1982 in Barking , London ) is a British jazz musician ( soprano , alto and tenor saxophone , also vocals , composition ).

Live and act

Brown, who began learning the saxophone at the age of 13 after receiving basic musical training on the recorder and piano , studied at the University of Kent in Canterbury and the University of Oviedo in Asturias .

Brown has performed with musicians such as Monty Alexander , Ramón Valle , Michel Camilo , Hilario Durán , Dean Fraser , Byard Lancaster , Sonny Bradshaw and Otis Williams . In 2008 she toured the UK as the opening act for Temptations . She has also worked as a soloist for artists as diverse as Sway DaSafo , Bashy , Omar Lye-Fook , Soweto Kinch , Alexander O'Neal , Mica Paris , Terri Walker , Dean Fraser and Desi Jones . She was also touring with Errol Brown , Courtney Pine , Diana Krall and as part of Jools Holland's Rhythm & Blues Orchestra .

She took part in PanJazz 2010 , where she performed with musicians such as Etienne Charles and Leon Foster Thomas . She played to a sold out house at the O2 Arena in London. In 2012 she presented her album April Showers May Flowers in the UK and abroad. She also gave two concerts with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra at the Hammersmith Apollo . In 2014 she and the University of East London created a music award for young musicians named after her.

Prizes and awards

Brown won a MOBO Award for Best Jazz Artist in 2008 and was nominated for an Urban Music Award for Best Jazz Act. In 2009 she was the first artist ever to be awarded the MOBO for the best jazz act for the second time. She also received the Urban Music Award as a jazz musician. In 2010 Brown was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of East London.
