Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ( RPO ) is a British orchestra , the main venue is London's Cadogan Hall. It undertakes extensive concert tours.
history
The RPO was founded in 1946 by Sir Thomas Beecham and played its first concert in Croydon on September 15, 1946 . Beecham was principal conductor until his death in 1961. He was followed by Rudolf Kempe (by then assistant conductor), in 1970 the title of Conductor for Life ( Conductor for Life received). This was followed by Antal Doráti (1975–78), Walter Weller (1980–85), André Previn (1985–92) and Vladimir Ashkenazy (1987–94) as musical director and first conductor . Yuri Temirkanow was appointed Principal Conductor in 1992 and Daniele Gatti as Musical Director in 1996. His successor was Charles Dutoit, but Gatti continues to accompany the orchestra as Conductor Laureate .
With the 2009/2010 season Charles Dutoit took over the post of Artistic Director. In 2017 he was also appointed Conductor Laureate for life. In January 2018, Dutoit, who was accused of sexual assault, resigned from his post with immediate effect. The honorary title was revoked at the same time.
In 1950 the orchestra went on tour to the USA, becoming the second British orchestra to visit America after the London Symphony Orchestra in 1912.
As well as performances of works from the classical repertoire, the RPO has also recorded a number of film scores , such as the one for Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Red Shoes . There were projects with rock bands such as 1969, the Concerto for Group and Orchestra of Deep Purple . It recorded the record series Hooked on Classics , as well as various pop arrangements by Pink Floyd , Queen and ABBA, among others . The orchestra has recently become closely associated with the British broadcaster Classic FM . The official version of the UEFA Champions League signature music was played by the RPO.
In October 2003, 14 RPO musicians recorded the string parts for several parts of the 2004 album A Semblance of Normality by the British folk metal band Skyclad .
Associated with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, which was formed in 1987 and is dedicated to the reproduction of the easier classical music.
