Barry Wordsworth

Barry Wordsworth (born February 20, 1948 in Worcester Park , Surrey ) is an English conductor .

In 1973 Barry Wordsworth became second conductor of the touring orchestra of the Royal Ballet and in 1974 chief conductor of Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet. In 1987 he gave up this post to conduct orchestral music, but remained the company's official guest conductor.

Wordsworth was Chief Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra from 1989 to 2006 and now has the title of Conductor Laureate . From 1990 to 1995 Wordsworth was music director of the Royal Ballet , Covent Garden and took this position again from 2007; from 2005 to 2008 he was also music director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet . Since 1989 he has been chief conductor of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra.

In addition to standard repertoire, Wordsworth's discography includes a large amount of 20th century British music as well as operettas and musicals. In 1993 he conducted the Last Night of the Proms in an exclusively British music program. His collaboration with the New Queen's Hall Orchestra, with whom he recorded orchestral works by Wagner in the performance style around 1900, had no far-reaching consequences.
