Manor Studio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Manor Studio (also The Manor ) was a recording studio in the Manor House of the same name in Shipton-on-Cherwell, Oxfordshire , England , north of Oxford. It was the first recording studio in the UK. The concept was initiated in 1969 by the French musician Michel Magne in the Château d'Hérouville .

The Manor House was owned by Richard Branson and was used as a recording studio by Virgin Records , with artists from other labels also working at the Manor. This was technically well equipped. In addition to 4 and 8-track tape machines, a 16-track device and various other devices for audio processing were available. The musicians also appreciated the rural seclusion and tranquility, the meals included in the rental price and the continuous use of the house.

The albums recorded here include the famous Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield , which was produced by Tom Newman at the Manor House between 1972 and 1973 . Immediately afterwards, the Bonzo Dog Band was represented in the studios, which resulted from the previous vocal performance by Vivian Stanshall on Tubular Bells. Sandy Denny began work on her second solo album Sandy in March 1972.

In April 1995, following the takeover of Virgin Records by EMI , the Manor Studio was closed. It has been the country residence of the Marquess of Headfort ever since .

In 2010 the New Musical Express announced that The Manor was on sale for £ 5.75 million.
