Tom Newman (* 1943 in Perivale , London ; full name Thomas Dennis Newman ) is a British musician and record producer. Newman played in various bands and has also produced and released eleven solo albums. Starting with Tubular Bells in 1973, he produced much of the music for Mike Oldfield and many other artists.

Live and act

Tom Newman was born in 1943 in Perivale, a suburb of the London Borough of Ealing, to an Irish woman. His father was of Russian Jewish descent. Newman grew up on a converted makeshift landing craft on the Thames until 1958 and attended high school in the London Borough of Ealing.

In 1959 he played guitar in the skiffle band The Playboys, later he turned to rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues and together with others founded the rock band The Tomcats with which he went on tour to Spain in 1966. The band released several EPs on the Philips Espania label , mainly with covers of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones . Tom Newman married a Spaniard and had a son. In 1967 Newman returned to England. Together with Tony Duhing on lead guitar, Alan James on bass, Jon Field on percussion instruments and Chris Jackson on drums, almost all of them were bandmates from the time with the Los Tomcats , Tom Newman took part as lead singer and sitar player on the July project , which released the psychedelic rock album of the same name in July 1968 on Major Minor Records .

In 1970 Tom Newman became a business partner with Richard Branson to set up the Manor Studio in Oxford. At the same time he agreed to the then 17-year-old Mike Oldfield to produce the album Tubular Bells for him during the studio's idle times . After the album was finished in 1972, Newman managed to convince Richard Branson, Simon Draper and Nik Powell to start a record company. Thus, in 1973 , Tubular Bells became the first Virgin Records release . The album, which reached the top of the US charts in 1974, sold more than 13 million copies.

Tom Newman directed many productions at Manor Studio in the years that followed, including the 1973 debut of Hatfield and the North and Hergest Ridge by Mike Oldfield in 1974, and Newman's own first solo album, Fine old Tom , released on Virgin. In 1975 he left the Virgin company after differences with Branson. A second studio album by Newman, misleadingly named Live at the Argonaut , was withheld and did not come to the public until 27 years later.

From 1976 to 1980 Newman ran his own studio, The Barge, on a houseboat in London's Little Venice on Regent's Canal . There was also his solo album Faerie Symphony , which was influenced not only by working with Mike Oldfield, but also by Bo Hansson's album Lord of the Rings . The album was published in 1977 by Decca Records and also released in Japan. 1980 Newman built the studio especially for radio advertising and sold it to Richard Branson. In the 1980s, Newman led several studios: A mobile recording studio The Sound Box with whom he promoted young artists on tour, the Ezee Studios in Islington and a studio in East Sussex for Coda Records which for the video series Aspects of the Great Artists was designed . His two solo albums Bayou Moon and Aspects were also created in East Sussex . In 1986 Tom Newman's second son was born. In 1987 the family moved to Hastings ; two further solo albums Ozymandias and Hound of Ulster and some songs for the album Tall Scary Things were created in the following three years in addition to his work as a producer for other musicians.

In 1991 Tom Newman bought a British minesweeper from the 1950s called Enterprise on which he set up a radio station.

In the years from 1971 to 1991 Tom Newman produced more than 56 albums and singles, and sold more than 25 million records.
