Doll by Doll was a London- based rock band formed in 1975 by Jackie Leven . It gained notoriety during the New Wave era, but was largely ignored by the media at the time because its emotional, psychedelic-influenced music was considered out of date compared to the music of other bands.

history

The original line-up consisted of Jackie Leven (vocals and guitar), Jo Shaw (vocals and guitar), Robin Spreafico (vocals and bass) and David Macintosh (vocals and drums). Together they recorded the studio album Remember , even before Spreafico was replaced by Tony Waite (1958-2003). In this constellation, they released their albums Gypsy Blood (produced by John Sinclair) and the third album of the same name, Doll By Doll , before the band split up. The conservative British daily The Daily Telegraph dubbed the group a 'Lost Masterpiece' because it was quickly forgotten.

At the time of their last LP Grand Passion , only Leven was left of the original line-up, then accompanied by Helen Turner (vocals and keyboards) and Tom Norden (vocals, guitar and bass) with a number of guest musicians, including David Gilmour by Pink Floyd . Mark Fletcher (bass) and Chris Clarke (drums) played live with the group. Doll By Doll finally fell apart in 1983, but Leven, Shaw and Macintosh, and ex-Sex Pistol Glen Matlock released the single Big Tears under the name "Concrete Bulletproof Invisible" in 1988. Leven became a successful solo artist and released a series of albums that dealt more with folk.

In 2005, a live recording of the original cast was released. Revenge of Memory is distinguished by the fact that it includes all but one song from the album Remember and was recorded in 1977 at the Sheffield Limits Club.

The four Doll-by-Doll studio albums were all released for the first time on CD by WEA / Rhino in March 2007.

style

The US-American Touch & Go - Fanzine wrote about the album Gypsy Blood , "the excellence (wells) out of the grooves ", and one feels "reminded of something that was lost a long time ago". The band does not belong to any camp, but enjoys a cult-like admiration from a small crowd. Their sound is "mainstream", but the lyrics are intelligent and profound.
