Elkie Brooks
Elkie Brooks (* 25. February 1945 in Salford , England , actually Elaine Bookbinder ) is a British singer and former member of R & B - band Vinegar Joe , after which it was largely successful as a solo artist in the UK.
Life
Her musical career began when she was 15 years old. With the inclusion of the Etta James -title Something's Got a Hold on Me she gave in 1964 on Decca her debut .
She spent most of the 1960s on the British jazz scene. With her future husband, Pete Gage, she joined the short-lived jazz rock band Dada before Brooks, Gage and Robert Palmer eventually formed Vinegar Joe. After three albums, the band broke up in 1974, and Brooks and Palmer went their own way. After a time as a background singer for the American southern boogie band Wet Willie , she returned to England.
Her 1975 solo debut album, Rich Man's Woman , received critical acclaim, but was commercially unsuccessful. Her commercial breakthrough came with the successor Two Days Away (1977) produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller , the first of several hit albums in a row, as well as the hits Pearl's a Singer and later Sunshine After the Rain and Lilac Wine .
Your LPs Shooting Star (1978), Live and Learn (1979), Pearls (1981), which consists predominantly of cover versions existing Pearls II (1982), Minutes (1984) and Screen Gems (1985) were all successful. With Fool If You Think It's Over (1981) by Chris Rea and with No More the Fool (1986) she achieved hit parades again. Since then, Elkie Brooks has remained a sought-after live performer. With Nothin 'but the Blues in 1994 she returned to the roots of her musicality. In 2009 she released a cover version of the Prince song Purple Rain on her album Powerless .
