In Canada, 37,000 units of If You're Reading This It's Too Late were sold in the first week . The release rose to number 1 on the Canadian album charts. Overall, sales within Canada were enough to place the mixtape at number 5 in the annual charts. In the United States, the mixtape was sold 535,000 times in its first week of sales. This was enough for another number one placement on the Billboard 200 . If You're Reading This It's Too Late was number 4 in the US annual charts .

In Australia, If You're Reading This It's Too Late debuted at number 2 and stayed in the album charts for ten weeks. Drake was also successful in New Zealand with 3rd place. In the German-speaking countries, the rapper was particularly successful in Switzerland, where he was able to reach position 7 in the charts. The mixtape was also represented in Austria in 20th place. In Germany, the success with 89th place was comparatively low. With 6th place in Denmark, 14th place in Norway, 15th place in the Netherlands, 16th place in Sweden, 30th place in Finland and 55th place in France, the mixtape was represented in the charts of numerous other European countries.

At the 2016 Grammy Awards , If You're Reading This It's Too Late was nominated for Best Rap Album , but lost to To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar .

The e-zine Laut.de rated If You're Reading This It's Too Late with four out of a possible five points. From the editor's point of view, Stefan Johannesberg, Drake is already living out his love for ambiguity and subtle allusions in the title of the mixtape . “According to speculations by Johannesberg, the title could be aimed at Birdman, P. Diddy, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar or Tyga. Drake goes " as it should be for a street album, [...] straight to work and without compromise.
