The organ

The Temple Neuf (German Neukirche ) is a five-aisled Lutheran church in Strasbourg , which has been rising near the minster since 1877 in place of a previous medieval building .

history

It was built from 1874–1877 in the neo-Romanesque style by the architect Émile Salomon according to plans submitted in 1872 and, in the year of its completion, was equipped with a large organ by Joseph Merklin .

The predecessor of the Temple Neuf was the former Dominican church, the second longest Gothic church building in the city after the minster at 85 meters. Since the Reformation , it has served as a Protestant church ( John Calvin preached in this church and held services here), the separate choir and the adjoining monastery as the city library and archive since the French Revolution . Among other things, the valuable collection of medieval manuscripts (including the Hortus Deliciarum ), which was destroyed by Prussian artillery fire during the Franco-Prussian War , was kept there. After the ruins were demolished, a competition for the new building was announced as early as 1871, in which Gottfried Semper also took part.

The medieval stained glass windows of the Dominican Church, a total of 292 fields, were acquired by the Liebfrauenkirchenstiftung (Fondation de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame) in 1832 and removed in 1833. From 1854 some of them (102 fields) were built into the Laurentius Chapel and other parts of the minster. Other stained glass windows from the Dominican church are exhibited in the Musée de l'uvre Notre-Dame and kept in its storerooms.

Furnishing

In today's church, in addition to historical furnishings (wheel candlesticks, baptismal font, pulpit, ...), preserved grave monuments from the previous building can be viewed: the grave slabs of Johannes Tauler († 1361) and a bishop Ortwein († 1514) as well as two works from the Hand of Landolin Ohmacht .

organ

Predecessors of today's organ are u. a. the organs created by the organ builder Rinck in 1700, which were sold in 1749 to the town of Ribeauvillé for the local St. George Church. They were completed by Legros in 1702 and checked by Andreas Silbermann in 1708 .
The present organ was built by Joseph Merklin in 1877 after the instrument created by Johann Andreas Silbermann in 1749 was completely destroyed during the bombing of 1870. Today's instrument is French-romantic in character. It has 40 stops on three manuals and a pedal.
