Howard "Howie" Dwaine Dorough Flores (born August 22, 1973 in Orlando, Florida ) is an American singer and member of the boy band Backstreet Boys .

Life

Howie Dorough was born in Orlando on August 22, 1973, the youngest of five children. He has Puerto Rican and Irish roots. In order to support the family of seven, his father Hoke, a full-time police officer , worked as a security guard in a bank after work. On the weekends he trained police dogs . Dorough's mother Paula also worked in the cafeteria of the town school.

He began his stage career at the musical theater. His sister Polly-Anna, who sang and danced in musicals herself, gave the then seven-year-old his first role in the musical "The Wizard of Oz". A year later he joined the popular children's show troupe "Show Stoppers" and played in various plays. At the age of twelve he received private singing and dance lessons and was a member of the city church choir.

Upon graduating from Edgewater High School, Howie Dorough was named "Most Talented Entertainer" in the school's yearbook, which earned him a scholarship to Valencia Community College in Orlando. There he studied music and communication studies for two years. In addition, he continued to take part in various castings for commercials and musicals, where he met two of his later bandmates Nick Carter and AJ McLean . In 1993 the Backstreet Boys were complete with their cousins Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson and celebrated their international breakthrough in 1995.

After Dorough's sister, Caroline Dorough-Cochran, died of the autoimmune disease lupus in 1998 , he founded the Dorough Lupus Foundation , or DLF for short, an organization that uses financial donations to support other organizations and individuals who are dedicated to the research and treatment of this disease, as well as to appropriate educational work to have.

On December 8, 2007, Dorough married his longtime girlfriend, Leigh Boniello. In early 2008, Howie's father, Hoke Dorough, was diagnosed with lung cancer that had metastasized . Chemotherapy was unsuccessful and only weakened him even more. On June 21, 2008, he died of a brain tumor. On May 6, 2009, Dorough and his wife became parents to a son (James Hoke). On February 16, 2013, their second son Holden John was born.
