The Schürzenjäger , until 1996 Zillertal Schürzenjäger , were founded in 1973 and were one of the most commercially successful music groups in Austria . The farewell concert took place on July 21, 2007.

Band history

Like Slavko Avsenik and his Original Oberkrainer , they emerged from the adaptation of regional dance musicians to the changed conditions of media culture, keyword Musikantenstadl . In the course of time they developed from interpreters of traditional music with modern instruments to a band whose repertoire ranges from popular hits to pop to rock . They had their first big hits in 1987 with Sierra Madre (a cover version of Ronny's Sierra Madre del Sur ) and the interpretation of a traditional folk dance melody called Zillertal Wedding March , published in 1991 on the album Zillertaler Schürzenjäger '92 . They had their greatest commercial success with the rock-heavy 1996 album "Träume sind stark", which received several awards and advanced to number 6 in the German album charts.

The omission of the addition "Zillertaler" results on the one hand from the fact that in the 1996 band line-up only four out of ten members (including guest musicians) were from the Zillertal (Peter Steinlechner, Alfred Eberharter senior, Willi Kröll and Freddy Pfister), on the other hand confused them at the time with other bands that had the addition "Zillertaler" in their name.

Style change

With their commercially successful path, the Schürzenjäger in Austria became the epitome of the division between so-called folk music care and folk music. The success of the Zillertal wedding march was seen by folk musicians as an abuse of cultural heritage, not as a success of regional traditional music. When the drummer Patrick Cox joined the band, they began to mix the styles of Schlager, which the Schürzenjäger played at the time, and Rock / Hard Rock - this is where Cox comes from. Especially in the 1990s there was a medley lasting several minutes at the concerts, in which numerous rock classics such as (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction , Lady in Black and We Will Rock You were covered. Own songs have also been reinterpreted over and over again, especially the wedding march and the “Timple Boarischer” have been performed more and more rock over the years, cf. this z. B. the Zillertal wedding march on the live albums 20 years of Zillertaler Schürzenjäger and 30 wild years . Especially in the late 1990s, the albums became more and more rock-heavy, while in the last few years of the band, both styles were increasingly mixed with one another.

Every year in August the Schürzenjäger celebrated one of the largest open-air concerts in Austria for their fans in Tyrol (mostly in Finkenberg , but also in other places during the late 1990s, e.g. Walchsee 1997). For example, the final concert of the dreams-are-stronger tour in 1996 had around 100,000 visitors.

resolution

In 2007, the last tour, Desire for more, took place with a big final concert, the Farewell Alpine Air 2007 in Finkenberg on July 21st. The day before the final album Schürzenjäger 07 - Das Beste zum Abschieden was published. The tracks on this CD were played at the last open air in Finkenberg. The last concert in Germany took place on July 14, 2007 in Uelsen , Grafschaft Bentheim , in western Lower Saxony.

Last occupation

Peter Steinlechner

Peter Steinlechner (born January 9, 1953 in Mayrhofen ) founded the bands Los Alfredos and L'Equipe 2000 together with Eberharter at the end of the 1960s . He was the band leader, singer, songwriter and guitarist for the band and has two daughters, Anita and Petra. His wife Anni died on August 18, 1992 as a result of a heart attack . Songs like “Worth every heartbeat” or “Shouldn't stay that way” are based on this event.

Alfred Eberharter

Alfred Eberharter (born November 7, 1951 in the Mayrhofen district of Ginzling) was already playing regularly in his youth in his parents' inn. When Schürzenjäger was founded in 1973, he took over the economic interests of the band under the name Tramplan Company . He is the bassist and accordion player in the band and paints on the side. In 2004 his pictures were exhibited in a vernissage in Innsbruck . He is married to Steinlechner's sister Elisabeth, with whom he has two children (Alfred Jr. and Daniela). Eberharter gives the Rolling Stones as a musical role model .

Patrick Cox

Patrick Cox was born on December 13, 1960 in Munich to a US soldier and a German. From 1963 to 1972 he lived with his family in the United States . Then they moved back to Munich. He attended boarding school in Ising am Chiemsee, where he played in 1976 in the school band "The Flames". He later played in various Munich and Tyrolean bands such as the Speedy Weekend Band and also completed an apprenticeship as a music dealer . In 1982 he moved to Tyrol, where he played guitar for the band Revenge until they broke up. He then worked for some time as a studio musician and sound engineer, first for demo recordings, and later for the publishers Tyrolis and MCP , which mainly produced folk music. It was there in 1989 that he met the Schürzenjäger producer Halef Krug, who suggested that he introduce himself to the band. At the time, however, Cox was playing in the Delago combo as a guitarist and was initially not interested in playing folk music. The meeting with band leader Steinlechner was nevertheless positive. Shortly thereafter, they began mixing the folk sound of the philanderers with Cox's rock style. Until the breakup he was the drummer, guitarist and singer of the band.

He is currently working as a front man on his solo project "Patrick Cox" and as a music producer. His fellow musicians are: Frank Stimpfig (bass, vocals), Wolfram Hentschel (guitar, vocals), Günter Schmuck (keyboards) and Claus Mehling (drums). In August 2009 the single "Barefoot dancing" was released. He is also the chief buyer for guitars and accessories at Europe's largest music store Thomann in Treppendorf .

Alfred Eberharter Jr.

Alfred Eberharter Jr. was born on April 24, 1979 in Innsbruck , his parents are Alfred sen. and Elisabeth Eberharter. At the age of seven he began to play the accordion and took lessons for it. He started playing the piano when he was ten. After graduating from high school in 1998, he wanted to study music and performing arts in the jazz department of the University of Graz , but the registration deadline had already expired. His father and Steinlechner took him as a guest musician on the Schürzenjäger's 25-year tour, for which he learned to play percussion instruments. He began his studies in 1999 and later continued it in Linz after continuing to tour with the band. From 1998 to 2001 he was a guest musician with the band. Since then he has been the drummer, bassist and percussion player of the band until the end, alongside the drummer for the party band VIA and runs his own recording studio.

Christof von Haniel

Christof von Haniel (born February 18, 1960 in Munich as Christof Linckh ) first grew in Munich's Schwabing and took from the age of six piano lessons at the piano seminar Waltershausen. At first he wanted to become a sound engineer, but pursued this goal only half-heartedly and decided at the age of 18 to become a professional musician. From 1980 to 1985 he toured with the show band Universe , the following years he worked as a studio musician, a. a. for Peter Schilling and Jürgen Drews . In 1992 he married Andrea von Haniel, with whom he has been friends since 1983. The couple have two children, Anja and Robin. He has been a guest musician since 1999 and since 2001 a permanent member of the Schürzenjäger, playing the keyboard and accordion there. Von Haniel was in the meantime a member of the band "Patrick Cox", which he left in March 2009. From 2010 to 2016 he was a permanent member of the band "Rauschhardt" (including Jäcki Reznicek from SILLY on bass), with whom he released the album "Free Falling".

former members

Willi Kröll (born September 8, 1949 in Mayrhofen-Ginzling) worked for the Schürzenjäger from 1973 to 2000 and then switched to the “ski instructors” and then to the “Zillertaler Gipfelstürmern”, with whom he again produces folk music. His hobbies include a. Mountaineering and skiing.

Freddy Pfister

Freddy Pfister (born January 13, 1962 in Zell am Ziller ) played the accordion, keyboard and Hammond for the Schürzenjäger from 1986 to 1998. In 1998, because he also wanted to carry out his own project in 1999, Peter Steinlechner dismissed him without notice and founded the HOI! . Today Pfister is touring with his own quartet, the "Freddy Pfister Band" through Germany, Holland, Austria and Italy. He is the father of two daughters.

Günter Haag

Günter Haag (born October 25, 1962 in Vienna ) played with the band as an electric guitarist from 1992 to 1996. In 1998 he joined the group “HOI!”. He has lived in Wiesbaden since 2003 and heads Mediabid, the digital media department of Auktion und Markt AG.

Florian Leis-Bendorff

Florian Leis-Bendorff (born October 22, 1969 in Hamburg ; † October 4, 2005 in the Harburg district ) was a permanent guitarist in the group from 2001 to 2005, for which he had been a studio musician since 1992. After Günter Haag's departure in 1996, he was the successor on the stage. He hanged himself in his home on October 4, 2005, the reasons are unknown.

Guest musician

Christian Dzida

Christian Dzida (born September 13, 1969 in Schwaz / Tyrol; † November 2, 2009 near Peine ) was a live musician with the band from 1995 to 1998. In 1999 he switched to the group "HOI!". From 2000 he concentrated on his work as a producer and entrepreneur in the film and show sector and most recently worked on new entertainment ideas such as the "Cine Show", a novel combination of cinema with musical / stage show. He died on November 2, 2009 in a self-inflicted traffic accident on Autobahn 2 near Peine.

Nils Tuxen

Nils Tuxen played pedal steel and guitar with the band from 1996 to 2007. He travels a lot as a studio and live musician, including with Konstantin Wecker , for example with anger and tenderness (live) . At the end of the 1970s, Nils Tuxen was also a guest musician with the Truck Stop group . In 2014 he played some instruments on the album I've done it all - Vol. 1 (I've done everything before) by Cisco Berndt .
