Sierra Madre (song)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sierra Madre is a song of modern folk pop music .

Composition, text and cover versions

The pop singer and composer Ronny , bourgeois Wolfgang Roloff , wrote the song together with Hans Hee in 1970 under the title Sierra Madre del sur and recorded it himself in his recording studio . The title was only a moderate success at the time.

In 1987 the Zillertal Schürzenjäger released Sierra Madre as a new recording with great success. The song was subsequently recorded by numerous other artists (for example Kastelruther Spatzen , Heino , Tony Marshall , Marianne and Michael , Semino Rossi ).

Today, the song is one of the greatest successes in German-language popular music and has been on the GEMA list of performances in the underground area for several years .

Content and presentation

The song describes in a few words the romantic aspects of the busy and revered life of mountain farmers . Consists of 2 stanzas of 4 lines ( rhyme scheme [aabb]) describes the first verse morning mood, the second the end of work after the day's work is done. Both times have a "look up" to the peaks and the sky in common (2nd line each). So are classic set pieces of modern Alpine myth ( "sunny stately tread", "burning sunset" / Alpenglow ) laid in a mountain range in America - the song is named after the Mexican mountains Sierra Madre del Sur named. Apart from the reference to the title and refrain, this is only hinted at in one stereotype (“where the white condor pulls so lonely”).

Otherwise there are general references to archaic customs (“Greeting to the sun”), tradition (“does your old song sound”), religion (“from a thousand hearts it sounds like a prayer” (original text)) and a memento mori (“how happiness often goes by quickly ”). As a result, the refrain, which repeats the song title several times, is related to a prayer, a hymn . As such, the chorus is also intoned in the interpretations; in the live versions of the Schürzenjäger it is performed in a mantra - like repetition of several minutes and partly octaved upwards , which is intended to reinforce the solemn and lofty character of the melody.

The success of the Schürzenjäger version was also due to the advent of the sea of lights in the later 1980s, when the audience brought lighters, sparklers or the like especially for rock anthems and waved them over their heads. The song is an important contribution to the beginning alpine rock branch of Austropop , the first musical genre of the 20th century that was perceived as independent Austrian.

It has also been popular in the chapels of numerous beer tents at the Oktoberfest in Munich for many years.

Remarks:

  1. The phrase can also be found in mountaineering songs like mountain vagabonds we are
  2. whereby the Andean condor is not native to Mexico and the California condor is not white
  3. the sea of lights organized by SOS Mitmensch in Vienna in 1993 , the name of which is related to this, also the skirt-hunters took part
