Christian Heinrich Delius (born October 24, 1778 in Wernigerode ; † April 14, 1840 there ) was an archivist and historian .

Life

Delius was the only son of the mayor and city counsel Jakob Heinrich Delius in Wernigerode. After attending the Latin school in his hometown, he went to the Ilfeld Pedagogy in 1796 and to the University of Göttingen in 1798 . From 1800 to 1801 he attended the University of Halle and then returned to Wernigerode, where he entered the service of Count Christian Friedrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode . On June 7, 1802 he was appointed to the count's archival assistant and on June 23, 1804 to the count's archivist (ius). In 1810 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Delius accompanied the then Hereditary Count Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode on his trip to Paris in 1807 and stayed with him at the Congress of Vienna in 1814/15 and at the Prussian court in Berlin in 1822 to close a new recess between Prussia and the Count's House of Stolberg-Wernigerode. For his outstanding services, he was appointed Count's Council on September 7, 1814, Government and Consistorial Council in 1816 and Director of the Count's Government in 1834. He exercised this function until his death. He built a new house behind the Wernigerode town hall , which is now used as the Harz Museum.

On June 4, 1816, in Wernigerode, he married Luise Henriette Caroline Hopstock (1793–1861), the daughter of the Wernigerode merchant Andreas August Carl Hopstock (1752–1802).

Delius left behind an important library of around 13,000 volumes and 10,000 maps, which were combined with the Count's library after his death . His written legacy, however, was integrated into the Count's archive and is now administered at the Wernigerode location of the Magdeburg department of the Saxony-Anhalt State Archives .
