The Geschwister-Scholl-Schule (internal school for short: GSS ) is a cooperative comprehensive school in Bensheim an der Bergstrasse . It was in 1972 as a successor to the construction of high school founded in Bensheim and Rodensteinstraße school has a sixth form . The school is named after the Scholl siblings .

history

In 1967 the construction of the shoemaker's building began, which is now the center of the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule. It was the construction of a building for a primary school for the then young district of Bensheim-West. Although the building was still being built in 1971, 800 high school and secondary school students from the former Rodenstein School moved into the building, which had been expanded to include a west wing and contained 32 classrooms.

In 1972 the school was named the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule and was expanded to become a comprehensive school through the advanced high school. It was not until 1974 that the construction work was completed to such an extent that the students and teachers of the advanced high school could also move into the building. At this point in time, the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule had students in 1940. In order to curb the lack of space associated with the high number of pupils, the building of the former Rodenstein School with 13 classrooms and specialist rooms was allocated 2 km from the current school building. Half of the secondary school branch and, from 1983, the entire main school branch were housed in this adjoining building.

In 1989, an additional building was built on the north side to house the upper level. The additional space created in this way enabled the main school branch and the outsourced part of the secondary school branch to move back into the main building.

In 2001 extensive modernizations took place. The Geschwister-Scholl-Schule is now an environmental school in Europe .

In 2006 the construction of the new canteen and other rooms began. The building was built on the north side, where there was once the schoolyard for the 5th to 7th grades. Construction was completed in August 2007. The construction work on the new music, navi and administration rooms was completed in spring 2012.

In the spring of 2008, on the initiative of the student council, the school was affiliated to the project School without Racism - School with Courage .

Historical sources

The historically valuable documents of the predecessor institutions of the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule are in the Hessian State Archives in Darmstadt (inventory H 54 Bensheim A). The inventory includes lists of pupils and school reports since 1911. The inventory has been fully indexed and, if data protection permits, researchable online.

Known students

The disabled athlete Robin Doll (first, 200 meters freestyle second and 50 meters back third, multiple national champion) attended the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule at the 1998 International German Championships in swimming at 50 and 100 meters chest as well as 50 and 100 meters freestyle. as well as Michael Meister (former Deputy Chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group , 2013-2017 Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Finance in the cabinet Merkel III ) attached to the Scholl school in 1980 his high school graduated.

Projects of the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule

Among other things, the school takes part in the advanced training initiative funded by the Ministry of Culture to expand methodological skills in the classroom ( Klippert program). The aim of this initiative is to lead the students to learn and act more independently.

The history workshop Geschwister Scholl of the school is worth mentioning . The aim of this project is to keep recent German and European history in memory and thereby draw conclusions for the present; in particular, the democratic roots of German history are to be explored and history in the region is to be made clear and comprehensible through own research.

In 2005, class 10a at the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule took part in the youth thinks future project .

The project School without Racism - School with Courage was already decided by an initiative of the student council in the school year 2005/2006 and finally implemented on February 22, 2008, the day of death and remembrance of the siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl after a signature campaign . 76.47% of the pupils previously spoke out in favor of a school with courage and thus agreed to the three SOR-SMC basic principles mentioned and showed their "through a subsequent human chain of 1700 pupils lined up, as well as 130 teachers around the entire school" red card “against the right. What was probably the largest event in the history of the school was coordinated by the members of the student council, who became aware of the television with the Hessischer Rundfunk and numerous local media and who attended the events with reporters.
