Michael Günther Meister (born June 9, 1961 in Lorsch ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He has been Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister of Education and Research since March 2018 .

Life and work

After graduating from the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule in Bensheim in 1980 , Meister completed a degree in mathematics and computer science at the Technical University of Darmstadt , which he completed in 1985 as a qualified mathematician. He then worked as a research assistant in the mathematics department of the TH Darmstadt. In 1988 he received his doctorate here as a Dr. rer. nat. with the work An investigation of the local cut-off error for a linearized one-step method for the numerical solution of systems of quasilinear parabolic differential equations . He then did his military service from 1989 to 1990 . From 1990 to 1995 Meister worked as a flight dynamics expert at the Operations Center of the European Space Agency (ESA / ESOC) in Darmstadt .

Michael Meister is Protestant and married and has two sons.

From 1983 to 1994 Meister had a mandate through the Free Voters , since 1989 also mandates through the CDU. He has been a member of the CDU since 1991. Since 1994 he has been chairman of the CDU district association Bergstrasse and since 1999 also chairman of the CDU district association in South Hesse.

From 1989 to 1997 Meister was a member of the city council of his hometown Bensheim and was chairman of the CDU parliamentary group there from 1993 to 1994 .

He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 1994 . From 1996 to 1998 he was Deputy Chairman of the Enquête Commission Future of the Media in Business and Society - Germany's Path to the Information Society . From 2002 to 2004 Meister was chairman of the finance working group of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group . After Friedrich Merz resigned , he was elected deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in December 2004, where he was responsible for the areas of economy, medium-sized businesses, finances and the budget. On the occasion of his appointment as State Secretary, his office ended in December 2013.

Michael Meister entered the Bundestag in 1994, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017 as a directly elected member of the Bergstrasse constituency and otherwise via the Hesse state list. In the Bundestag election in 2005 and in the Bundestag election in 2009 , he received 44.4% of the first votes in the Bergstrasse constituency , 48.3% in the 2013 Bundestag election and 38.9% in the 2017 Bundestag election .

Public offices

In December 2013, Meister was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Finance in the Merkel III cabinet. In the Merkel IV cabinet , he moved to the Ministry of Education.
