The synagogue in Auerbach , a district of Bensheim in the Bergstrasse district in Hesse , was built in 1779. The profaned synagogue at Bachgasse 28 is a protected architectural monument .

history

The Jews in Auerbach first attended the services in Bensheim. In 1779 they built their own synagogue on Bachgasse. The building was renovated in 1874 and 1911. Since the First World War , when a large number of the Jewish men from Auerbach were doing military service, they joined forces with the Jewish community in Zwingenberg and held the service in the Zwingenberg synagogue . The last service in the Auerbach synagogue took place in 1932 on the occasion of Bella Hahn's wedding.

Berthold Frank, the last head of the Jewish community in Auerbach, sold the synagogue with the associated house in 1934 to the owner of an agricultural machinery repair shop, who used the synagogue building as a workshop.

Until the city of Bensheim bought the synagogue in 1972, the former church served as a workshop. As part of the renovation of the town center, the building of the Jewish school built in 1874 on the same property, which also housed the teacher's apartment and the ritual bath ( mikveh ), was demolished. The outside of the synagogue was renovated from 1979 to 1981 and the forecourt was prepared. After the interior renovation, the former synagogue was opened as a cultural venue on October 26, 1986. The sponsor is the "Auerbach Synagogue Association".

Commemoration

On the synagogue there is a plaque with the inscription: “Take care and protect your soul so that you do not forget the story that your eyes have seen and that it will not come out of your heart all your life and make it known to your children. Deuteronomy. Former synagogue built around 1780. In memory of the Jewish community in Auerbach. Renovated by the city of Bensheim in 1986 ”.
