Synagogue in Zwingenberg

The synagogue in Zwingenberg is a secular synagogue in the Bergstrasse district in southern Hesse , which was completed in 1903. The building at Wiesenstrasse 5 is a protected architectural monument .

history

In 1861 the Jewish community in Zwingenberg established a synagogue on the old town hall square. This very small synagogue was badly damaged by a fire on the Day of Atonement ( Yom Kippur ) in autumn 1902. Therefore a new synagogue building was built, which was inaugurated in 1903.

“However, the Zwingenberg synagogue was spared from being destroyed during the November pogrom in 1938: The son of the so-called Schabbesgoi (a non-Jewish woman who does the work that Jews are not allowed to do in the Jewish household on the Sabbath) who committed suicide the day before was in the building had taken, laid out. The residents of the neighboring houses also feared for their own houses in the event of arson and urged the SA men not to start a fire. Nevertheless, the windows of the synagogue were thrown in, the command panels carved over the main entrance and the Bible quote engraved in golden Hebrew characters 'Know who you are standing in front of!' knocked off. The stars of David from the enclosure were also largely destroyed. The cult objects of the synagogue had already been moved to Frankfurt / Main before these events. The house was to be blown up later, but was then sold by the last Jew in Zwingenberg, Moritz Schack, for 6,000 RM. "

After 1964, significant changes were made to the facade of the synagogue building and apartments were set up in the building.

Zwingenberg Synagogue Working Group

The association “Arbeitskreis Zwingenberger Synagoge” has existed since June 1999, with the aim of giving this building an appropriate new use.
