The Heinrich-Metzendorf-Schule (own spelling also Heinrich Metzendorf Schule , internal school for short: HMS ) is a vocational school center in Bensheim , which consists of different types of schools. In 1848 the “Craftsman Sunday School” was founded by the local trade association. That was the first establishment of the vocational school system in the entire Bergstrasse district , from which today's school center developed. Today the school consists of two buildings. The main building has existed since October 1967, shortly afterwards the takeover of part of the commercial schools, the current auxiliary building (construction department). Since 2015 it has been a specialty school in the Bergstrasse and Odenwald districts for the InteA program (integration and graduation) of the Hessian state government and teaches students from 49 nations.

School types

The various types of school at Heinrich-Metzendorf-Schule are divided into part-time and full-time organized forms. The part-time vocational school is attended by pupils who have concluded an apprenticeship contract, while the full-time school forms are attended by pupils who have decided to acquire a secondary degree , the technical college entrance qualification or the general higher education entrance qualification .

Training content

The vocational school branch comprises 40 apprenticeships in the industrial-technical field and in the field of nutrition and housekeeping. The vocational school branch offers a vocational school for electrical engineering, metal technology, wood technology, nutrition / hotel, restaurants and body care, with a middle degree as a qualification. There is also a technical school branch that builds on vocational training, such as the technical school for bricklayers, carpenters, draftsmen, tilers, road builders, building fitters, reinforced concrete workers, painters, carpenters, technical draftsmen and heating engineers. The vocational high school specializing in mechatronics and the environment cooperates with the Karl Kübel School in Bensheim, whereby one can obtain the general university entrance qualification. The two-year technical college, on the other hand, is offered in the fields of civil engineering, electrical engineering, nutrition, information technology and mechanical engineering and leads to the advanced technical college entrance qualification.

Educational work, equipment and offers

Since the beginning of the 2015 school year, the Heinrich-Metzendorf-Schule has been the focus school for the InteA program (integration and graduation) of the Hessian state government in the Bergstrasse and Odenwald districts. This is a measure of the Hessian Ministry of Culture (HKM) and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Integration (HMSI). Immoment, around 160 young refugees without knowledge of German are taught in intensive language classes and courses. In addition to German and mathematics, job-specific knowledge is taught. Michaela Wiegand is currently coordinating the intensive language classes.

In addition to the vocational high school for mechatronics, there is also the field of environmental technology, which focuses on environmental technology and environmental economics .

1843–1944 advanced training school

In order to meet the need for qualified building tradesmen, the local trade association responded to the demand for a training school with regard to vocational schools in 1844 . In 1848 the “Craftsman Sunday School” was opened in the boys' school on Kirchenplatz. The third of December 1848 is the birthday of the vocational school system in the entire Bergstrasse district. In 1851, 120 students from Bensheim and the surrounding area attended classes. In 1856 the first school and house rules were issued ; School fees were first raised in 1872. From 1874 onwards, 155 students were grouped together in professionally oriented classes at the advanced training school. On October 31, 1886, due to the increasing number of pupils, a schoolhouse was built in the upper Grieselstrasse, which had to be expanded again in 1895. In August 1907, a larger building was built in Heidelberger Straße according to the plans of the main teacher Hugo Eisenhardt . At the end of the school year 1910/11, Sunday school ended and was replaced by the vocational training school as a construction, trade and painting school. In 1924 the school was taken over by the city of Bensheim. In 1932 the business school director Eisenhardt retired. In 1938 the architect Ludwig Keßer , his successor, was forced into retirement by the Nazi government. In the same year, the vocational and advanced training school was transformed into a vocational school at the district level . The first director was Josef Stoll . The school had to be closed in 1944 because of the Second World War. The entire school system suffered a huge setback because of National Socialism .

1945–1977 district vocational school

On October 12, 1945, classes could be resumed as a district vocational school. The first provisional management was taken over by trade teacher Hugo Roth , after which on November 1, 1947, director Erich Mattern took over management of the vocational school . When director Erich Mattern retired on March 31, 1958 , Hans Steglich , director of the vocational school, followed and died on November 16, 1960. After the school authority was initially the city of Bensheim, on April 1, 1959, the school authority of the district vocational school was taken over by the Bergstrasse district . The separation and independence of the commercial department and the business school was up for discussion because the vocational school system in the Bergstrasse district had to be restructured. On January 1, 1963, the vocational school was divided into the industrial and the commercial district vocational school. The new building, founded on December 1, 1960, was occupied on January 23, 1967 and used from October 26, 1967. The school now had the name "Commercial District Vocational School". The staff consisted of 43 teachers, with Franz Müller as headmaster since 1960. With internal renovations, new classrooms had to be created for the growing number of students. Preparation, teaching aids and collection rooms were lost. The takeover of part of the commercial schools building next door (ancillary building) created more space.

1978–2004 vocational schools in the Bergstrasse district

From 1978 the school was named "Vocational Schools of the Bergstrasse District in Bensheim". In 1981 the staff had grown to 114 colleagues. As headmaster Franz Müller in 1982/83 went into retirement, the subsequent renewal representatives of the headmaster was study director Lothar Thehos his successor. In 1997, headmaster Matthias Hegyaljai took up his position and began the long-term renovation of the school, which resulted in investments of 17 million euros.

In 2004, the conversion to the new school with the name Heinrich Metzendorf School was completed. The namesake was Franz Heinrich Metzendorf (1866-1923), a stonemason and architect of the Bergstrasse. School social work and school pastoral care were set up under headmaster Matthias Hegyaljai . A media library was opened in 2005 . Wolfgang Freudenberger has been the headmaster since 2008 . The Metzendorf Society was founded in order to preserve the legacy of the namesake. In 2012 the outbuilding (construction department) was completely renovated, after which in 2015 the new “Metzeria” building was inaugurated. The media library was expanded to include a self-study center. With the renovation of the administration wing, a new school secretariat and offices for the secretaries were set up. In addition to the renewal of the machine park, new computers, laptops, interactive boards and projectors were purchased, as well as energy-efficient lighting, heating, and the insulation of buildings and windows.
