The Kurobe Kyōkoku Tetsudo KK ( Jap. 黒部峡谷鉄道株式会社 , English . Kurobe Gorge Railway Co., Ltd. ), short Kurotetsu ( 黒鉄 ), is a private narrow-gauge railway with passenger transport in the Kurobe -Schlucht in Toyama prefecture .
history
The Kansai Electric Power Company built the 20.1 km long, 2 foot 6 inch (762 mm ) railroad line for the construction of the Kurobe Dam . The scenic main route ( 本 線 , Honsen ) passes 21 bridges and 41 tunnels. The section from Unazuki to Nekomata was put into operation in 1926 with a 600 V direct current overhead line and extended to Keyakidaira in 1937. Passenger traffic began in 1953.
The Kurobe Dam was completed in 1963. The Kurotetsu narrow-gauge railway was split off into a subsidiary in June 1971.
