The serviced Kirchberghäuschen is located on the summit of the Kirchberg. On June 2, 1857, the Kirchberghäuschen was inaugurated as the " Lusthaus ".

The idea to build the Kirchberghäuschen came to some of the Bensheim dignitaries around Dr. Bernhard Krauss, Mayor Taupel, Baron von der Rodenstein, Hainz church computer and the knight landlord Werle. Around 1840 they were of the opinion that the Kirchberg, which was still undeveloped at the time, should have a grand finale. The original plan by district builder Mittermeier provided for a magnificent tower on top of the building, which was probably never realized for cost reasons.

Construction of a simplified variant began in 1849. Completion dragged on for years. The Bergstrasse ordinance and notification sheet wrote on March 25, 1857: “The facilities on the Kirchberg, next to the house (...) had come to the point where they were given to the ruin (...). Now that a good path has been laid out, the little house has been repaired and the windows have been provided with good colored glass, this system will also serve its purpose and contribute to the beautification of the city. ”The inauguration finally took place on June 2nd, 1857 with an 18-point mark -Program especially for the "higher society". After the meeting in the town hall a pageant with flag bearers, white-clad women, young men and representatives of the local associations led to the Kirchberg. The program announced cannon shots, games, amusements and fireworks. It was followed by a ball evening in the Gries house. On Sunday, August 8th, 1858 there was an invitation to “harmony music” at “with good restoration”. The “Worms Sextet” played and the program announced “Opera overtures, waltzes, gallops, concert variations and serenades”. Since its completion, the Kirchberghäuschen has been one of the most popular destinations for Bensheim citizens and at the same time one of the city's landmarks. As a cultural monument, it is under monument protection .

Memorial stone

On March 24, 1945 - three days before American troops reached Bensheim - twelve German and foreign prisoners, men and women, were murdered by the Gestapo north of the Kirchberg summit. Among the murdered were three American parachutists (WH Forman, RT McDonald, Ray F. Hermann). A memorial stone commemorates the deed. The murdered were Rosa Bertram, Erich Salomon and Walter Hangen from Worms, Lina Bechstein from Kriegsheim , Gretel Maraldo from Offenbach am Main , Jakob Gramlich from Bonsweiher , the two French Eugene Dumas and Lothaire Delaunay, the Dutch Frederik Roolker, and three other unidentifiable people People. The Pole Johann Goral survived the shooting seriously injured. Besides him, the Russian Alexander Romanov and the four Groß-Rohrheim citizens Heinrich Ahl, August Lautenbach, Heinrich Menger and Georg Ackermann survived . The memorial stone, which is located at the place of the shooting, can be reached - coming from Brunnenweg - on a narrow, steep path up to the Kirchberg.

Vineyard location

The loess and limestone soils of the Kirchberg also ensure that two of the best vineyards on the Hessian Bergstrasse , the "Kirchberg" and the "Kalkgasse" locations , are located below the summit on the southern slope . Both locations belong to the large Bensheim location "Wolfsmagen". Coming from Bensheim, an educational wine trail leads to the summit of the Kirchberg.

Remarks

A Bensheim elementary school bears the name of the mountain as the Kirchberg school .
