Akiko Dōmoto ( Japanese 堂 本 暁 子 , Dōmoto Akiko ; born July 31, 1932 in California ) is a Japanese politician. From 2001 to 2009 she was non-party governor of the Japanese prefecture of Chiba .

Dōmoto studied until 1959 at the Tōkyō Joshi Daigaku and then worked for the television station TBS . In 1980 she received several awards for her documentary Baby Hotel . In 1989 she was elected to Sangiin for the Japanese Socialist Party . She later moved to the New Sakigake Party . From 1994 to 2000 she represented the Japanese government at the World Conservation Union , from 1997 as deputy chairwoman.

2001 Dōmoto ran successfully as an independent in the gubernatorial election in Chiba. She was only the third woman in the governorship nationwide after Fusae Ōta ( Osaka , 2000-2008) and Yoshiko Shiotani ( Kumamoto , 2000-2008). When she was re-elected in 2005, Dōmoto was supported by the DPJ , the Kōmeitō , the SDP and the Chiba Citizens' Network.

In the gubernatorial election on March 29, 2009 Dōmoto did not run for a third term. Her successor was Kensaku Morita .
