Yoshiko Shiotani

Yoshiko Shiotani ( Japanese 潮 谷 義 子 , Shiotani Yoshiko ; born April 5, 1939 in Saga Prefecture ) was from 2000 to 2008 non-party governor of the Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto . She was nationwide the second woman in the governorship after Fusae Ōta ( Osaka Prefecture , 2000-2008).

Life

Shiotani studied until 1962 at the Nihon Shakai Jigyō Daigaku and then worked as a social officer in Saga and Ōita , from 1972 then in a children's home for small children in Kumamoto. In 1999 she was appointed lieutenant governor; In 2000 she was elected governor with the support of the LDP and Kōmeitō, and was confirmed in office in 2004.

The most controversial topic of her two election campaigns and her first years in office was a dam project on the Kawabe River that had been planned since 1966 , against which local residents and fishermen spoke out vehemently. In 2005 the plans were temporarily put on hold.

In 2008 Shiotani no longer ran for a third term. She was succeeded on April 16, 2008 by Ikuo Kabashima .
