Ikuo Kabashima

Ikuo Kabashima ( Japanese 蒲 島 郁 夫 , Kabashima Ikuo ; born January 28, 1947 in Yamaga , Kumamoto Prefecture ) is a Japanese political scientist, politician and since 2008 non-party governor of Kumamoto.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1965, Kabashima initially worked for the local agricultural cooperative . In 1968 he was sent to the USA as an "agricultural trainee" ( nōgyō kenshūsei ). In 1974 he graduated from the University of Nebraska Faculty of Agriculture . There he then earned a Masters in Agricultural Economics , then in 1979 a PhD in Political Economy at Harvard University .

After that, Kabashima taught at the University of Tsukuba , from 1977 at the Political Science Institute of the Law Faculty of the University of Tokyo . In between he made guest appearances at the Universities of Washington, Princeton and, from 2007, at the Prefectural University of Kumamoto .

In 2008, Kabashima left Tokyo University and applied to succeed Governor Yoshiko Shiotani , who was not running for a third term. Against four other candidates, including the Democratic Party- supported Takayuki Kamakura, and with the support of the farmers' association Nōseiren ( 農業 者 農 政 運動 組織 連 盟 , nōgyōsha nōsei undō soshiki renmei ), he won the election on March 23, 2008. Unlike his predecessor posed he opposed the construction of a controversial dam on Kawabe , which was finally abandoned by the Hatoyama cabinet in 2009 . In the 2012 gubernatorial election , Kabashima was re-elected as an all-party candidate (excluding communists) for a second term. He won his third election in 2016 with a two-thirds majority against Seishi Kōyama , the former mayor of Kumamoto City , and a communist candidate. A few weeks later, the Kumamoto earthquake occurred , the management of which initially largely determined his third term in office. He won the 2020 gubernatorial election with a two-thirds majority, this time against Seishi Kōyama as the only challenger.
