Bismarck Tower

Main article: Bismarck Tower (Bensheim)

On May 17, 1897, the post director a. D. Ernst Hallwachs and the entrepreneur from Bensheim, Kommerzienrat Wilhelm Euler (1847–1934), started building a Bismarck tower on the summit of the Hemsberg . The tower was built according to plans by Heinrich Metzendorf and completed on July 6, 1902. The tower has a height of 19 m and is owned by the Odenwald Club . The construction costs for its construction amounted to 10,000 marks. From 2008 the listed tower will be renovated.

When the weather is nice, the tower is open on Sundays and public holidays. The local population usually refers to the Bismarck Tower as the Hemsberg Tower .

Flora and fauna

The loess and limestone soils of the Hemsberg also ensure that one of the largest vineyards on the Hessian Bergstrasse, the "Hemsberg" site, is located below the summit on the south and west slopes. A large part of the forest and meadow area around the Hemsberg, on the other hand, was placed under nature protection because of its diverse fauna. One of the largest occurrences of the orchid orchid in Germany is on the meadows . 430 of the around 2,500 flowering plants found in Europe have been mapped in the Hemsberg area. The lime-loving blood-red cranesbill , the Rapunzel bellflower , the Jacob's ragwort , the Carthusian carnation , the real bedstraw and the very rare mountain fennel grow on the Hemsberg. Orchids and columbines grow northeast of the summit . The forested upper part of the Hemsberg is covered to a large extent with cherries and ash trees, which bloom in white one after the other from May to June.
