Nicolai Borger

Nicolai Borger (born October 15, 1974 in Bensheim ) is a German author , director and actor .

Models of his pieces are the grotesque , the popular theater , the série noire and conceptual art . The topics are migration , marginalization and violence , especially terrorism . Borger made them tangible for the stage long before they became mainstream in theater.

The influences of film work are the nouvelle vague and dogma films .

Life

In 1991 Nicolai Borger was an exchange student in the USA at William Horlick High School in Racine , Wisconsin . Shortly before graduating from high school, he had his first professional engagement in a production at the Jewish Theater in Germany . This was followed by his first play, Love , which he staged in 1994 with an ensemble of acting and art students. Borger first studied North American studies with a minor in Sinology at the renowned John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the Free University in Berlin . He then trained as an actor at the European Theater Institute in Berlin .

Various engagements in Germany and French-speaking countries followed. Stations were the Maison des Arts du Grütli, Geneva, La Cartoucherie, Paris and the Thalia Theater Hamburg (TiK-Studiobühne). From 2001 he devoted himself to work as a playwright in Berlin. Several premieres and world premieres as well as festival productions followed annually until 2009. The war trilogy and the play cycle Global Ghetto were created. Likewise the Neukölln trilogy . Borger staged the short film trilogy Trilogy of Love and Poverty parallel to the theater work. 2010–2012 he directed the five-part short film cycle sérieBERLINnoire. In 2011 Nicolai Borger appeared on stage in a charity staging by the Berlin Children's Fund as Simba in Disney's Lion King . His feature film Drei Finns was made in 2013/14 . As part of his teaching position for the directing course at the Babelsberg Film University , he worked with Gabriele Gysi in 2018 . He is the chairman of the Green Film Award film festival. Borger also stands in front of the camera as a film actor. He stages international variety shows, a. a. for Macau and Dubai .

Nicolai Borger is an alumnus of the ZEIT Foundation , the center of his life is Berlin. Borger's children were born in Berlin. His daughter Nicolais played the lead role in his short film War Child and has been a film and television actress ever since.

Dramatic work

Over 20 plays by Borgers were premiered or premiered by 2009. Festival productions a. a. at the Thalia Theater, Hamburg, at the Berlin Theatertreffen and at the Münchner Kammerspiele . Global ghetto

From 2001 to 2009, Borger's seven-part series Global Ghetto was created . The action takes place in the fictional city of Apokanata. The first part, vinyl , received a lot of media attention. “The piece works fantastic,” wrote the FAZ on the occasion of the premiere. The proximity to reality was emphasized. The piece kerosene , part 4 of the cycle, drafted a civil war scenario in Germany in 2004 that seemed unthinkable at the time. It premiered in the following year under the title Borscht Endspiel Neukölln . In part 5 of Global Ghetto , Liebe & Armut (2006), the illegal immigrant Douga declaims: "You shouldn't love, you shouldn't be poor." "Apokanata is everywhere", was the headline of the Berliner Zeitung on the occasion of the premiere, and further: “Author Nicolai Borger plays in the usual manner with a clichéd language ... socially critical, contemporary theater. Apokanata is a city somewhere in Germany. War trilogy

War machine , the first part of the war trilogy , premiered at the Autorentheatertage of the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, deals with violence in close social areas as a mirror of world politics. Club theater

Another focus of Borger's drama is the club theater , starting with his play Lieber Freund , which premiered in the Dunckerclub Berlin in 1999, to his role as conférencier in Tannhauser's Dance of Love im Klunkerkranich , Berlin 2013.

Film direction

Borger's cinematic works are in the tradition of auteur films . In 2004 Borger staged the short film trilogy Trilogy of Love and Poverty based on motifs from his play Liebe & Armut . With David Bredin and Eva Renzi in their last role. In 2010–2013, Borger's 5-part short film cycle sérieBERLINnoire was created .
