FZ missile system-70-mm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FZ90 is a 70 mm unguided air-to-surface missile (2.75 inches) for use on aircraft and helicopters. It is manufactured by Forges de Zeebrugge (now Thales Belgium) in Herstal , Belgium .

construction

The FC rocket system consists of a rocket motor with folding wings (WA tail unit or FFAR tail unit ), various warheads and the rocket launcher (launch device).

Rocket engine

At the rear end of the FZ90 solid rocket motor there is a tail unit with three self-unfolding wings, which, in conjunction with the spirally arranged deflectors in the outlet nozzles, should lead to the most stable trajectory possible and thus less dispersion. The operational range of the missile is between 1 and 8 km. The FZ90 rocket motor is compatible with the American Hydra 70 rocket canister type.

Warhead

The following warheads are available for aircraft (fixed wing aircraft) and helicopters (rotary wing aircraft):

  • FZ120 for training purposes
  • FZ71 splinter warhead (HE - H igh E xplosive, German: highly explosive) to combat soft and lightly-armored targets (release of fragments after detonation)
  • FZ181 for target marking (visible or in the near infrared range , also generates white smoke).
  • FZ122 Flechette with 2200 metal Flechettes against lightly armored and soft targets (the charge is ejected after the rocket motor has burned out shortly before the target by programming a time fuse)
  • FZ149 MULTIDART with 36 metal arrows (DARTS) against lightly armored targets (the charge is ejected after the rocket motor has burned out shortly before the target by programming a time fuse)

Rocket launchers

FZ207 launcher for 19 missiles

Airplanes take off either from launch devices with seven (LAU32) or with nineteen launch tubes (LAU51). Helicopters use the FZ233 / FZ220 with seven tubes, the FZ231 / FZ219 with twelve tubes or the FZ225 / FZ207 with nineteen tubes.

Further development to the guided missile FZ275LGR

A guided version of the air-to-surface missile version (FZ275 LGR) has recently become available. It is based on SAL (Semi-Active Laser) technology and has a laser search head and a control unit with canards . The FZ275 LGR is the European answer to the American Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II program.

In October 2015, FZ successfully completed a test firing of its 70 mm guided SAL missile (FZ275 LGR) from the Rooivalk helicopter of the South African Air Force (SAAF).
