Karl Ernst Knodt (born June 6, 1856 in Eppelsheim , † September 30, 1917 in Bensheim ) was a German poet . He was known to his contemporaries as a forest pastor or as the “ poet of longing ”.

Life

He was born in Eppelsheim (near Alzey) as the fourth of five sons of the pastor Adam Knodt and his wife Elise, née. Schmidt, born. Between 1875 and 1878 he studied theology in Strasbourg , Utrecht and Tübingen . In Strasbourg he became a member of the Wingolf Association Argentina to Strasbourg. This was followed in 1878 by the preacher's seminary , which he completed in Friedberg .

In 1880 he was ordained as a parish deacon and school deacon in the rectory in Gernsheim am Rhein . In the same year he married Käthe Christmann in Nordheim . With her he had two sons: Karl Adam and Theodor. From 1892 to 1904 he was a Protestant pastor in Ober-Klingen .

In 1904 he took a leave of absence from the parish office for health reasons. He moved to Bensheim in a house built by Heinrich Metzendorf . In 1910 he finally retired and died of a sudden death seven years later on September 30, 1917.

Karl Ernst Knodt cultivated lively relationships by letter, but also personally. He had various contacts with writers of his time, including Hermann Hesse , Wilhelm Raabe , Hans Thoma , Wilhelm Steinhausen , Agnes Miegel , Gustav Schüler and Prince Emil von Schoenaich-Carolath , who often visited him in his house in the Odenwald.
