Prince Emil Rudolf Osman von Schoenaich-Carolath-Schilden (also: The Poet Prince from the Haseldorfer Marsch ) (born April 8, 1852 in Breslau (now Wrocław , Poland); † April 30, 1908 at Gut Haseldorf , Holstein , Germany ) was a German squire, poet and novelist.

Life

Prince Emil von Schoenaich-Carolath-Schilden was born on April 8, 1852 as the son of Prince Karl von Schoenaich-Carolath and his wife Emilie von Oppen-Schilden in Breslau. After attending grammar school in Wiesbaden , he went to Zurich and studied literature and art history there in 1870/71 . He then joined the Dragoon Regiment in Colmar , where he served as a lieutenant until 1874. He spent most of the following years traveling, including to Rome and Egypt . In 1887 he married Katharina von Knorring and lived in his castles in Haseldorf / Holstein and Palsgaard / Denmark. The couple had two sons and four daughters.

His literary enthusiasm was aroused at home, especially by his mother, and by the family's contact with the writer Karl von Holtei , who was also from Wroclaw . As a poet he belongs to neo-romanticism . His early poems were in a somber mood. In later works, which also included short stories and short stories, he took up religious and ethical topics and pointed out grievances. Von Schoenaich-Carolath also emerged as a sponsor of other writers, for example he supported Rainer Maria Rilke , Karl Bienenstein and Detlev von Liliencron .

On April 30, 1908, Prince Emil von Schoenaich-Carolath died at Haseldorf Castle and was buried in the cemetery of St. Gabriel's Church.
