Church of St. Gabriel in Haseldorf

The St. Gabriel church is located at the entrance to the park of the Haseldorfer manor house. The church was built between 1200 and 1250 and is considered the most important late Romanesque brick building in the Elbmarschen .

Parish

Today the St. Gabriel Church belongs to the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church , parish of Pinneberg, to the parish of Sankt Gabriel Haseldorf - Hetlingen . The church in Hetlingen is another preaching place in the community.

The church

The nave walls

The nave walls still largely show their original condition. They are made of red monastery bricks in a Gothic bond. The masonry shows various friezes in the upper area .

The south wall has a cross-arched frieze and shows green glazed stones over the window arches. The original main entrance, the south portal, was bricked up.
The north wall is designed similar to the south wall, but has a pointed arched portal (entrance to the patronage chair ) and a different frieze. It is a console frieze made of edgewise bricked headstones that are rounded at the bottom. Above that there is a German band on a runner layer.

The crypt chapel

In 1599 a crypt chapel was added to the choir on the east side . The chapel was intended for the murdered squire Detlef von Ahlefeldt . The murder was the culmination of a tragic family feud. Two of the large stone tablets at the back of the church tell of this.

Changes in the 19th century

Interior to the east with triumphal arch

In 1883/84 the church received its roof turret with the church clock. At the same time, the choir that had moved in was also re-sheathed, as was the Ahlefeldt crypt chapel. In 2007 and 2008, the exterior walls and the epitaph of the church were renovated in accordance with listed buildings. In spring 2009 the interior was also completely renovated and underfloor heating was installed.

The inside of the church

The Romanesque triumphal arch between the chancel and the nave bears witness to the first beginnings of this church. Including hanging the oldest piece of the Church: It is a 1-meter high early Gothic triumphal cross with quatrefoil tails from the years 1300 to 1310. This has a study at the Institute of Wood Biology in Hamburg result.

The Patronage Lodge of the Haseldorf estate was built in 1731 at the instigation of the patron saint Heinrich Andreas von Schilden. It is still available to the respective landlords today. The box stands on the north wall of the nave on Ionic wooden columns. The side parapets show hangings of cloth, the middle a painted coat of arms. The upper end is formed by a tail gable with a medallion in the middle part .

The simple altar was made in 1958, but the top is from around 1700. A baroque acanthus frame with two angels encloses a somewhat older picture. It is a resurrection picture that was originally painted on a tomb door.

The late Gothic bronze baptism dates from 1445. The stand ring is provided with a round arch frieze and four coats of arms. Four figures carry the cauldron-like cup . There is an inscription all around. Small reliefs show depictions of Mary, a group of crosses and Saint George .

The pulpit was built through donations from the community in 1643 after the old pulpit was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . It consists of heavily veneered oak, designed in moderate baroque style . Reliefs are set in the fields between the pillars of the pulpit. From left to right they show the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Shepherds, Gethsemane , the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension. The pulpit has a sound cover with cartilage on top , figures of virtue and a crowning angel figure.

The organ with its charming prospect from around 1700 is located on the west gallery of the church. A high substructure bears a baroque front with a higher middle section and pointed side sections. The free-standing figures represent four muses . Four more muses can be seen as a relief in the acanthus foliage.

The chandelier from the 17th century is made of brass. This means an alloy with 56 to 80 percent copper. It has a two-story structure and shows a female figure at the top.

epitaph

On the east wall of the crypt extension there is an epitaph of the Ahlefeld family from 1599. It consists of sandstone and was created by the stonemason Hans Steinhauer. The resurrection of Christ is depicted in a relief, flanked by pilasters and covered with a pediment with an entablature frieze. God the Father appears in the triangular gable. A half-dressed woman is standing over the gable. Outside you can see a lying naked figure. There are two plinth areas under the scene. The upper one shows coats of arms, the lower one inscriptions.
