Thomas Johannes Mayer (born October 30, 1969 in Bensheim ) is a German opera singer with a bass-baritone voice .

Life

Mayer first studied philosophy , history and musicology and then completed his vocal studies with Lieselotte Hammes and Kurt Moll at the Cologne University of Music . His first engagement took him to Regensburg. Further stations with permanent engagements were the opera houses in Darmstadt, Basel, Karlsruhe and Hamburg.

Guest engagements followed worldwide at the  Bavarian State Opera in Munich , the Royal Opera House Covent Garden , the Opéra National de Paris , the Milan Scala , the Berlin State Opera , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Dresden State Opera , various other German state theaters, the Théâtre de la Monnaie Brussels , the New National Theater in Tokyo , the Vienna State Opera , the Tanglewood Festival in Boston, the Bregenz Festival , the Salzburg Festival and the Bayreuth Festival .

He sang major roles in his field in the title roles of Don Giovanni , Wozzeck , Macbeth , Rigoletto , Eugene OneginMathis the painter and Orestes .

In 2007/08 he was Achilles in the opera Penthesilea by Othmar Schoeck , directed by Hans Neuenfels, which was awarded the staging of the year by the specialist magazine Opernwelt .

In the same season Thomas Johannes Mayer made his debut at La Scala in Milan in the title role of Wozzeck under the direction of Jürgen Flimm .

In 2012 he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Telramund in Hans Neuenfels' Lohengrin production, which he also sang in 2013 and 2014. In 2016 he could be heard as Fliegender Holländer directed by Jan Philipp Gloger , in 2017 as Wanderer in Siegfried directed by Frank Castorf , in 2018 as Amfortas directed by Uwe Eric Laufenberg , before taking on the role of again in 2019 as part of a cast Telramund took over in the production of Yuval Sharon .

Mayer has worked with conductors Claudio Abbado , Daniel Barenboim , Semyon Bychkov , John Eliot Gardiner , Valery Gergiev , Mariss Jansons , Philippe Jordan , Wladimir Jurowski , Sir Neville Marriner , Zubin Mehta , Kent Nagano , Andris Nelsons , Kirill Petrenko , Donald Runnicles , Simone Young , Simon Rattle , Christian Thielemann , Marcello Viotti , Sebastian Weigle and Jaap van Zweden together.
