The Hospital Church of St. Joseph in Bensheim on the mountain road is under monument protection standing cultural monument . The church is located on Hospitalplatz in Hauptstrasse 83.

history

A previous building of the Hospital Church was mentioned as early as 817. Presumably, the Hospital Church was built as the Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche as early as the 14th century and is possibly exactly on the site of the old church. In the 15th century the church had three altars . The present choir with tracery windows was added to the church around 1500. It is assumed that the nave was probably used as a sick bay and only after the building of a hospital for purely church purposes. The time of the change of use is unknown. In 1706 the church was consecrated again and received a bell . In 1869 the building was extensively renovated. Large parts of the masonry, especially of the western gable front, and the roof structure were renewed. In 1872 the church was consecrated in honor of Saint Joseph. In order to accommodate a second bell, the roof turret from 1870 was replaced by a new one in 1894 . During the Corona crisis, the Catholic ZDF church services with Pastor Heinz Förg were broadcast from the Hospital Church, including the Pentecost high mass with the Essen bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck .

construction

The Hospital Church is a simple, unplastered hall building with a gable roof . The masonry consists of rubble stones. The windows and ends of the gable walls are set in red sandstone . The nave has a rectangular floor plan with a retracted choir. The windows of the west portal are designed in pointed arches. There are loopholes-like windows next to the portal, while a group of three windows is located above the portal. On the roof is an octagonal ridge turret with a slate pointed helmet. The small hospital church is one of the most important architectural monuments in Bensheim, primarily for reasons of local and church history.
