history

Since space was needed in the city center of Bensheim for a new town hall and the churchyard in front of St. George's Church was too small, the city fathers of Bensheim decided in 1554 to create a new cemetery ("Gottesacker") outside the city walls in a southward direction . A small chapel, possibly with a tower, was built in the years that followed. The chapel was then replaced by today's cemetery church from 1616 to 1618. The building was still in Bensheim's Lutheran time. The east wall of the old chapel was used for the new building. This can be seen in two small, now plastered, arched windows. The construction was planned and managed by city builder Hans Grunauer, councilors Werner Tuchscherer, Philipp Mahler and Jost Falck, and mill doctor Bernhard Schmidt. The master mason in the building was Hans Rapbether. Plaques on the four sides of the church mention the six people; partly with wives.

In 1673 the now Catholic church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Adolph Gottfried Volusius to the first Mainz bishop and martyr , Saint Creszenz . At the beginning of the 19th century the church was changed and slightly expanded. 1877 was the chancel and a sacristy built onto the south gable. The flat ceiling of the interior was replaced by a wooden barrel . In 1884 the large two-storey church tower with an octagonal wooden bell storey with a concluding pointed helmet was built above the chancel . In 1908 the church became the property of the Catholic parish. In 1972 some grave inscriptions were discovered and uncovered during renovation work inside the church . The gravestone of the shoemaker Wendel Funck was found, who was the first Bensheim citizen to be buried in this cemetery in 1554.

The grave of Heinrich Metzendorf is located in the cemetery .
