Crescens (saint)

Crescens

Crescens was one of the Seventy disciples . The name Crescens means the growing one in Latin. He is mentioned in the New Testament: 2 Tim 4,10  EU reports that he moved to Galatia . The incorrect spelling “Gallia” for “Galatia” (e.g. in the Codex Sinaiticus ) led to the desire to see a missionary in Gaul in Crescens. The first bishop of Vienne is said to be identical with the crescens of Timothy, but this is apparently due to a confusion with the bishop of the same name from the 3rd century. In legends from the 12th century, Crescens was also claimed to be the founder of the Archdiocese of Mainz , probably to feign ancestry, which was common at the time . According to the Martyrologium Romanum , Crescens died as a martyr under Trajan , but there is no confirmation of this by previous evidence. Crescens is venerated as a saint ; his feast day is June 27th .
