History and the present

The Rodensteiner Hof: from 1945 to 1984 the town hall of Bensheim

The city of Bensheim has had a town hall since 1470 . The old town hall was located on the market square and was rebuilt in the classical style in 1781/82 as part of an administrative reform . In 1903/04 the rather dilapidated building was redesigned according to plans by Heinrich Metzendorf . It was destroyed in World War II on March 26, 1945 and never rebuilt. In 1953 the rubble was cleared and the free space was used as a parking lot. In 1978/79 the house on the market was built at this point .

From 1945 to 1984, the town hall of Bensheim was housed in the Rodensteiner Hof . On March 25, 1984, the former Bischöfliche Konvikt became the seat of the Bensheim town hall.

Former Episcopal Konvikt

The building complex of the former Bischöflicher Konvikt is located north of the city center at the intersection of Kirchbergstrasse and Wilhelmstrasse. The solid construction was built in 1899/1900. The plans for this came from the Mainz cathedral master builder Ludwig Becker . Previously, the Konvikt was at Darmstädter Straße 56.

It was not until ten years after completion that the building was plastered and the interior decorated. The reason for the late completion was the high construction costs. Under pressure from the National Socialists , the Konvikt was closed in 1939 and converted into a military hospital. After the end of the Second World War it was used as accommodation for displaced persons until 1949 . The St. Bonifatius student home was then housed in the former Episcopal Konvikt. In 1981 it was closed by the Ordinariate for financial reasons . The city of Bensheim acquired the building complex and carried out extensive renovations inside so that most of the city's administration could move from the Rodensteiner Hof to the new town hall. The former chapel is now used as a meeting room.

construction

The ground floor consists of bricked-in granite. The three upper floors are plastered. The building corners are provided with staggered cuboids. The windows on the first floor are designed as round arches. With a few exceptions, for example in the stair tower, the windows are otherwise rectangular. On the north side is a pyramidal roof with a square tower top and a polygonal stair tower with a pointed helmet . The southern part of the building is significantly narrower. The terrace porch in the west was raised in 1982 and closed with a pent roof . In the east and southwest is a risalit with a gable roof . To the east of the building is the former chapel of the Konviktes with a three-sided choir and a gable roof. The walls of the chapel are divided by buttresses and two-lane pointed arched windows.
