Peter Weyrauch
Peter Weyrauch (born February 2, 1923 in Bensheim ; † September 20, 2019 in Darmstadt ) was a German architect .
Life
Peter Weyrauch was born in 1923 as the son of master electrician Ludwig Weyrauch (born January 28, 1884 in Würzberg ; † July 2, 1953 in Bensheim) and Ida Auguste Margarethe Rähmer (born August 27, 1892 in Leipzig- Eutritzsch ; † November 18, 1961 in Heppenheim ) born. His parents had moved from Darmstadt to Bensheim in 1915 . He grew up in Bensheim with his siblings Wilhelm , Ludwig and Marianne. Here he attended elementary school from 1929 to 1937, which was followed by an apprenticeship as a carpenter with a journeyman's examination from 1938 to 1941. In the 1930s he took violin and viola lessons and then played in chamber orchestras (1937–1948 and from 1984). After the Reich Labor Service (1941–1942) he was in the military (1942–1944) and in American captivity (1944–1946).
From 1946 to 1948 Weyrauch worked as a carpenter journeyman in Aschaffenburg and Lorsch , in order to then study historical interior design (1948–1953). He financed his studies as a furniture restorer at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt (1948–1951) and in shop fitting (1951–1953). After four years of work in an architectural office in Kassel (1954–1958), he studied building construction with a state examination (1957–1960), while working part-time in historical church construction. After a short nationwide activity in church construction, he worked from 1961 to 1988 as an architect, building and monument conservator at the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau . From 1988 Weyrauch worked as a freelance architect. In 1990 he received his doctorate in engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt with a thesis on the sculptor Ludwig Habich . His extensive publication activities include overview works on church building and monument conservation in the Lauterbach district (1974) and the churches of the old district of Gießen (1979). Peter Weyrauch was married to Gertraud Bangert and lived in Darmstadt. The marriage had three children.

While in the 1960s and 1970s numerous churches were demolished or completely modernized, Weyrauch, as a civil engineer and church architect, campaigned for the preservation and consistent reconstructions. Thanks to his commitment, some half-timbered churches were preserved and returned to their original state, such as the Evangelical Church in Klein-Eichen and the Evangelical Church in Reinhardshain . Under his direction the chapel was moved from Lollar to the Hessenpark . Some of his reconstructive measures were rated as “purifying”, for example with regard to the renovation and reconstruction of the Wendelinskapelle (Butzbach) (1982–1987).
Weyrauch was also able to assert himself with creative concepts, such as in 1968 with the interior renovation of the Evangelical City Church in Grünberg , where he had the floor raised and community rooms built in the base area of the church. In the Evangelical Church of Kleinlinden , the expansion of the choir and the addition of a sacristy with an adjoining room can be traced back to Weyrauch in 1966.
Weyrauch also campaigned for the old church furnishings . He discovered the old altar cross of the Evangelical Church in Hattenrod in the attic of the town hall there. In the Evangelical Church of Ettingshausen he had pictures by the church painter Daniel Hisgen rescued, which were already lying on the rubble in front of the church.
