Wilhelm Georg Rudolf Weyrauch (born May 1, 1914 in Darmstadt ; † September 22, 2003 in Bensheim ) was a local researcher and local politician in Bensheim.

Life

Weyrauch, who studied surveying engineering, was the author of important regional historical research results. He worked together with various regional historical bodies, such as the Hesse Historical Commission . He was one of twelve founding members of the Bensheim Museum Association. He was also an active local politician, for example city councilor and building committee chairman for many years. He tried to save important historical buildings like the Wambolter Hof and the Walderdorffer Hof , which were threatened with demolition.

His scientific writings contain important theses on the development of the city of Bensheim and the Lorsch monastery .

For his diverse achievements, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, the plaque of honor of the city of Bensheim, the honorary chairmanship of the Bensheim Museum Association, honorary membership of the history and homeland associations in the Bergstrasse district and honoring the Lorsch Heimat- und Kulturverein.

He was married to Ilse Weyrauch, b. Pieschl (1926-1993). The marriage had three children. His brother was the architect Peter Weyrauch .

Appreciation of the life's work

On the 100th birthday, Wilhelm Weyrauch's life's work was honored. The regional newspaper “Bergsträßer Anzeiger” wrote: “The local politician and local historian Wilhelm Weyrauch has undoubtedly left a big mark in his place of residence in Bensheim as well as in the Bergstrasse district. (...) He researched history and summarized his results in numerous publications. (...) As a city councilor, he built the bridge to the present. For his multiple work he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and the honor plaque of the city of Bensheim. On May 1st (2014) he would have been 100 years old. Wilhelm Weyrauch, a Protestant Christian and proven Nazi opponent, joined the Social Democratic Party in 1954. In the city parliament he worked from 1964 to 1977, including in the building committee. In political togetherness, he made a name for himself through a culture of mutual respect. He always had a policy for the benefit of Bensheim in mind. (...) A large number of publications reveal Weyrauch's life's work. In his obituary, the historian Lupold von Lehsten suggested naming a street after Wilhelm Weyrauch. "
