Udo Helmbrecht

Udo Helmbrecht (born April 5, 1955 in Castrop-Rauxel ) was President of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and Director of the EU IT security agency European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA). He is currently a university professor at the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich and has been the technical director of the IT research center CODE there since March 2020.

Born in Castrop-Rauxel in 1955, Udo Helmbrecht graduated from high school in 1974 and then completed a two-year service with the German Armed Forces . In 1981 he completed his physics studies at the Ruhr University in Bochum. In 1984 the doctorate to Dr. rer. nat. with a thesis on Monte Carlo simulation of quantum mechanical many-body systems . During his doctorate, he worked from 1981 to 1983 as a research assistant at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the Ruhr University in Bochum and then until 1985 as head of the application software department at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal.

In 1985 Helmbrecht moved to Munich to join Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm GmbH (MBB) - a predecessor of today's EADS - and began his career as a systems analyst within a German-Chinese project. In 1986 he was appointed project manager. During this time, he completed a two-year junior management program. In 1988 he became assistant to the head of the aircraft division and in 1990 took over the management of the technical information systems department. From 1992 to 1995 he worked as program manager for information technology and was therefore responsible for the cross-product program and project management of information technology in the military aircraft product area.

In 1995 he switched to the Bavarian Chamber of Supply , an institution for professional retirement, occupational disability and survivors' benefits. As Director and Head of Information Processing (CIO), he was responsible for data processing, information technology, information security, application development, the data center and the network infrastructure.

From March 2003 to October 2009, Helmbrecht was President of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in Bonn. During this time, he expanded the authority into an operational IT security service provider for the federal government .

From October 2009 to October 2019, Helmbrecht was Executive Director of the European Union Agency for Cyber ​​Security (ENISA) based in Athens , Greece .

Since November 12, 2010, Helmbrecht has held an honorary professorship at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich , and since October 2019 he has been a professor there at the Faculty of Computer Science. Since March 2020, Helmbrecht has been the technical director of the CODE research center at the Bundeswehr University.
