In 1872 the school was founded by the citizens of Auerbacher and Bensheim as a secondary school for non-Catholic girls. From 1919 onwards, grades 5 to 10 were taught at the school. The first Abitur at the school was granted in 1937. The Goethe-Gymnasium became a full institution, since then grades 5 to 13 and 5 to 12 (G8) have been taught. In 1966, male students were admitted to the formerly all-girls high school for the first time. In 1999 the school was first recognized as an environmental school in Europe ; a year later the Goethe-Gymnasium became the European school . Spanish has been taught as a second foreign language since 2002. From 2005 to 2010 the building was completely renovated and modernized, with the addition of a new sports hall, a cafeteria and a solar system.

Furthermore, the Goethe-Gymnasium offers the opportunity to work in a very active student council.

The student council of the Goethe Gymnasium has been characterized by its great academic and social commitment since 2009. In addition to several awards such as Democratic Action for the commitment to democracy, she won the award of the most active SV in the Bergstrasse district four times in a row. This is due to many extensive and independently organized events such as “Stay tolerant-What else?”, “24 hours tolerance” or “Goethe goes fair” within the framework of “School without Racism, School with Courage”.

GGB entertainment portal

The Goethe-Gymnasium has an online school newspaper that deals with internal school and everyday events. It's called G-Web and is supervised by a teacher. The students meet once a week to discuss new topics and to collect suggestions for new articles. The portal team consists of around 15 members from different grades. You can join the team from the seventh grade. In addition to the editorial team, there is also the marketing department . The administrators ensure that the site is kept in order and that all links work. The entertainment portal has a cooperation with BAnane , the youth newspaper of the Bergsträßer Anzeiger . Employees of banana visit the students and give tips on how to write a good article. Occasionally, articles are exchanged and made available on the other side.

Environmental school

Photovoltaic system on the teacher's wing from the west

The repeated recognition as an environmental school in Europe is due to a whole range of environmental activities. For example, a biotope has been set up in the schoolyard , activities to save water are being developed with the Bergstrasse water forum, a special sales stand offers environmentally friendly work materials, and energy sponsors strive to keep energy consumption low.

The Goethe-Gymnasium has been producing environmentally friendly energy itself since November 25, 2005. A photovoltaic system on the roof of the administration wing with a total area of around 120 square meters produces a peak output of 15.2  kWp , which is fed into the general electricity network.
