Joseph Heckler (born June 15, 1786 in Bensheim , Hesse ; † February 12, 1857 in Bensheim) was a lawyer, member of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse and local history researcher in Bensheim.

Joseph Heckler was born as the third child of the Kurmainzian customs officer and escort Peter Caspar Heckler (1751-1837) and his wife Margaretha, born Berg (1745-1822). From 1799 to 1803 he attended the then four-class Latin school in Bensheim . In November 1803 he became a student in Heidelberg, but one year later he moved to the Hessian State University in Giessen, where he studied law and cameralia in accordance with his “Prohessian” attitude .

In 1806, after completing his studies, he left the university as a certified camera operator and initially practiced at the Nassau Office of Cransberg near Usingen . Later, in 1808, he became a candidate for the Hofkammer in Darmstadt. He got his first permanent job in 1813 as a rent office man in Heppenheim.

On June 29, 1813, Joseph Heckler, who was a Catholic denomination, married Nanette nee Lammert (1793-1844).

On September 26, 1821, Heckler was appointed Grand Ducal Hessian Conqueror (today head of the tax office). He held this position until his retirement in 1849. After his professional activity he was from 1856 until his death in 1857 a member of the 2nd Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

He was elected for the Center Party in the constituency Starkenburg 12 / Bensheim . His successor in the state parliament was Franz Reatz .

Joseph Heckler was also proven to be the first researcher to study the history of Bensheim in detail. The book Contribution to the History of the City of Bensheim and its Surroundings, with Special Consideration for the Lorsch Monastery , which he published in 1852, was his life's work.

On April 19, 1962, the new elementary school in Weststadt was named after Joseph Heckler.
