Bernhard Trares (born August 18, 1965 in Bensheim ) is a former German soccer player and current soccer coach . Most recently he was a coach at SV Waldhof Mannheim .

Player career

After he had been active at SV Kirschhausen until 1982 , Trares switched to the youth team at Eintracht Frankfurt , with whom he became German A-Junior Champion in 1983. As a youth player, he scored the goal of the month on July 16, 1983 with a long-range shot in the game against 1. FC Köln .

Trares' professional career began in 1985 in the second division at SV Darmstadt 98 . For the "Lilies" he played 126 games in four seasons and scored 28 goals as a midfielder . In 1989 he went to Aachen for Alemannia , with which he was relegated after his first season. He then moved to TSV 1860 Munich , with whom he also initially relegated and then twice rose to the Bundesliga. After three years of Bundesliga football in Munich, Trares went to Werder Bremen in 1997 . Here he became one of the guarantors in the defense and thus contributed significantly to the Bremen Cup victory in 1999 . In 2001, the now 35-year-old moved back to the second division; first he played for one season at SV Waldhof Mannheim , then two seasons for Karlsruher SC .

Trares made a total of 183 games in the Bundesliga and scored 16 goals; in the second division there were 281 games and 46 goals.

Coaching career

From December 2004 Trares worked as an assistant trainer at his former employer 1860 Munich. There he assisted the trainers Reiner Maurer and Walter Schachner . After the 2005/06 season he left TSV 1860 Munich to train as a football teacher . In January 2007, Wormatia Worms hired him as head coach. With Wormatia he won the Southwest Cup in his first season and qualified for the DFB Cup . In addition, Bernhard Trares and his team qualified for the regional league this season. On April 28, 2009 he was given a leave of absence due to the sporting situation - Wormatia was in 16th place in the table in the Regionalliga West . On November 17, 2010 Trares was presented as the successor to Ramon Berndroth at FSV Frankfurt . He took over the U23 team of the second division, which played in the 2010/11 season as promoted players in the Regionalliga Süd. For the 2011/12 season Trares took over the post of head coach of the second team at FC Schalke 04 , where he made his coaching debut on August 5, 2011 in a game against the second team of Bayer 04 Leverkusen . On May 19, 2014, the club announced that Trares would get a new position in the club and Jürgen Luginger will be his successor as coach of the U23.

Since the season 2015/16 Trares served as assistant coach Bruno Labbadia at Hamburger SV operates. Furthermore, he was also hired as a transition coach for players from the U19 to U23 of HSV. Trares' job was to be available as a contact person for the young players and also to be in close contact with their youngsters. On September 25, 2016, he was on leave from HSV after a bad start to the season together with Bruno Labbadia and Eddy Sözer .

In January 2018 Trares became the coach of SV Waldhof Mannheim in the Regionalliga Südwest . He led the team in relegation for promotion to the 3rd division . The Waldhöfer were not successful in the promotion games against KFC Uerdingen 05 , the team stayed with coach Trares in the Regionalliga Südwest. However, he succeeded in the following season with the SV Waldhof direct promotion to the 3rd division. His contract ran until June 2020. On July 1, 2020, the club announced that both the contract of head coach Trares and that of assistant coach Benjamin Sachs would not be extended any further.
