The Meerbach , also called the Schliefenbach in the upper reaches , is a 13-kilometer-long right tributary of the Weschnitz on the Bergstrasse .

geography

The Meerbach gives its name to the Meerbach Valley , in which the Bensheim districts of Zell and Gronau are located. It runs largely in the area of the city of Bensheim, south of the Erlache it forms the border to Heppenheim (Bergstrasse) for about 500 meters , only shortly before its confluence does it reach Lorsch .

course

The Meerbach (also called Schliefenbach in the upper reaches of Gronau ) rises in the Märkerwald west of Schannenbach directly on the Bensheim city limits on the Gronau area on the Kesselberg and flows in a westerly direction through the Meerbachtal to Gronau and Zell. From the local area of Gronau on, the K 58 district road to Bensheim largely accompanies its course. In both places, the Meerbach is partially built over or flows between the district road and the neighboring houses, so that numerous properties can be reached via small bridges. To the west of Zell, the Meerbach reaches Bensheim and first flows through the site of the former Wilhelm Euler paper mill , which is currently (as of June 2017) being built on with residential units. As the owner of the site, the Koehler Paper Group has undertaken to expose the twisted Meerbach on the site and to carry out a natural extension. The Meerbach then turns to the southwest and flows through the Meerbachviertel residential area in the south-east of Bensheim, which is named after it, then crosses under the Bundesstraße 3 and the Main-Neckar Railway and reaches the open land of the Upper Rhine Plain south of the Dentsply Sirona company premises .

To the southwest of Bensheim and shortly before its mouth, the Meerbach flows through the wetland of the post-glacial course of the Neckar on the southern edge of the Erlache nature reserve near Bensheim . This used to meander north along the Bergstrasse and flow into the Rhine at Trebur . Because of its importance for the bird world, this area has been reported to the EU Commission by the state of Hesse as a European bird sanctuary "Hessian Altneckarschlingen" (about 2,800 ha ). Today it is the best breeding area for the white stork and the reed warbler in the country and is one of the five best breeding areas for bluethroat , marsh harrier , black kite , curlew , oriole , reed bunting , stonechat and others.

To the west of this area the Meerbach crosses under the federal highway 460 and flows into the Weschnitz immediately afterwards. The confluence is a few hundred meters east of Lorsch near the confluence of Friedensstraße with the B 460.

Tributaries

A few hundred meters east of Gronau, the stream flows to the Rehklingen ( Klingenbach ) first from the right , then the Saubach from the left . The Hambach rises like the Meerbach on the Kesselberg, but flows down into the Hambach Valley to the south and only flows into it from the left a few meters before the Meerbach estuary at Lorsch. In addition, some nameless streams flow into the upper reaches of the Meerbach.

history

In 1812 there were at least four mills on the Meerbach, three of them in Zell and one below Gronau, the creek was obviously also called Mühlbach at the time .

"Zell (Cella) [...] located on the Mühlbach or Meerbach, is an old place that in Trad. Laur. occurs several times. [...] There are three mills on the Meerbach. [...] Gronau, a Lutheran parish village, an hour from Bensheim and half an hour from Schönberg, is also called Grunau and Grünau in old documents. It is located in a beautiful green valley on the Meerbach, [...] Below the village but on the side there is a mill. "

- Konrad Dahl : Historical-topographical-statistical description of the principality of Lorsch, or church history of the Upper Rhinegau, 1812

Another former mill on the Meerbach is the Hahnmühle in Bensheim.

environment

fauna

The Meerbach is divided into two different fish regions : the barbel region in the lower reaches, and the upper trout region in the upper reaches.

flora

The Bensheimer Streichling vineyard in the Hessische Bergstrasse wine-growing region is located on the northern slopes of the Meerbach Valley above Zell . To the south of Zell and to the north and west of Gronau lies the single vineyard Bensheimer Hemsberg . Both sites are part of the large Bensheimer Wolfsmagen site .

Sights and buildings

2.2 km northeast of the center of Gronau ( 49 ° 41 ′ 18 ″ N, 8 ° 42 ′ 22 ″ E ) is the natural monument Schannenbacher Felsenmeer in Schliefenbach . It is a granodiorite - block sea , which as a wall Gorge Felsenmeer with biotope character is protected.
