The Kesselberg rises in the western part of the western Odenwald in the Bergstrasse-Odenwald nature park on the northern edge of the Heppenheim forest , about 6 km northeast of the city center. It is located between the villages of Gronau in the northwest and Schannenbach in the northeast, both in the valley of the Meerbach , which leaves the Odenwald near Bensheim and flows into the Weschnitz near Lorsch , and between Scheuerberg am Lörzenbach in the southeast and Ober-Hambach am Hambach in the southwest; all of the aforementioned brooks arise on the Kesselberg. Between the Heppenheim districts of Scheuerberg and Ober-Hambach, the forest area of the city center stretches along a ridge as a narrow strip to the castle ruins of Starkenburg . In the other direction, the Kesselberg joins the 575.7 m high Krehberg in the east-northeast over a ridge around one and a half kilometers long . The stone castle rock formation lies on the southeast slope . About 500 m northwest of the Kesselberg is the approximately 498 m high secondary summit Heiligenberg .
