The old factories are a cultural monument in the city of Bensheim an der Bergstrasse . The building is one of the most important structures in Bensheim.

history

The old factory is a solid building that is located in the old town of Bensheim. The building was erected in 1732 for the factor of the Mainz cathedral chapter . Previously an aristocratic court of the Junkers von Rüdigheim zu Rückingen stood on this area . This noble court was possibly built in the middle of the 16th century. It is still unclear whether parts of the old Renaissance building were used for the establishment of the trading post. As a result of secularization , the trading post was given up and the building was initially used as a bailiwick . Later it was used as the seat of the district council . After the city of Bensheim acquired the old factories in 1868, the city high school was housed in the building. Six years later the building was expanded. Another upper floor and a mansard roof were added. Cast iron columns, which are still in the interior today , also date from the time of the renovation. A shell niche was let into the blasted segment gable . In it there is a statue of Saint Aloisius .

The grammar school moved out in 1882 and the building was initially used as a primary school. But at the beginning of the 20th century, the local history museum was installed on the ground floor , followed by a police station. After the end of the Second World War , several offices were temporarily housed in the old trading post. In the years from 1983 to 1987 the building was then completely renovated . Then the city library moved in. However, due to the excessive static load of the books, she had to leave the building again in 1999. Since then, the citizens' office and tourist information office for the city of Bensheim have been located in the old trading post.
