The granite rock sea , also called stone rubble, is an extensive geological natural monument in the municipality of Groß-Bieberau , district Rodau , in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg , southern Hesse.

location

The "granite rock-rock sea" is located in the natural area of the Vorderer Odenwald , Lower Modautal (Mühltal). The natural monument is located southwest of Lichtenberg in the Fischbachtal and south of Rodau on the northern slope of the Altscheuer mountain. It covers an area of about 18.17 hectares.

description

The Felsenmeer was listed as a natural monument before 1932 and is protected as a geological natural monument by ordinance of May 27, 1959. It consists of two granite - block currents , which go down to about 400 m long and 100 m width of the slope. Often large boulders have pushed one another and form bizarre shapes. The granite is assigned to the leukogabbro diorite and tonalite . The rocks are overgrown with various types of moss (including fork tooth moss ).

The Felsenmeer lies in a dense mixed deciduous forest, of which around 3.5 hectares are not used for forestry and are designated as a core area for nature conservation. Numerous old or fallen trees provide habitat for cave-breeding birds and endangered wood-dwelling insect species.

The forest on the Altscheuer has been part of the Natura2000 protected area "Beech forests of the Vorderen Odenwald" (FFH area 6218-302) since 2008 .

tourism

The natural monument can be visited on a circular hiking trail from Lichtenberg.
